We drive the ElectraMeccanica Solo EV and see why it failed to live up to its hype.

  1. Pointing out the narrow tires is silly as even tires that wide are probably unnecessary especially as you don't want upsprung mass. Complaints that is it not sporty enough are silly as it is not meant to be sporty but to be a solo transportation vehicle.

  2. Why the hell anyone would want to buy a vehicle that have so much fl😮aws … and why the hell the makers make this into a better vehicle where ppl can appriciate it, and the cost is still is too expensive… what a waste!!…

  3. This would be so great to be mainstream, i feel that it would fir a lot of people's use case for intercity driving. This is what I want to see dominating the streets, instead of all the crossovers and trucks, which are always dangerous to be around for everyone else.

The other electric vehicle donut showed off with two seats seems a bit more practical, if you can even call that practical. If that could be mass produced to drop the price down that would be quite nice.

  4. You know, my 1987 CRX HF was rated at 58hp and 88 ft-lbs of torque if I recall correctly. Weighted slightly more then the Solo, I believe.

So I think the greater torque of the Solo might be contributing to the fun factor.

Admittedly, as a 2-seater hatchback, the CRX was a bit more practical.

I'd say that maybe a little more thought/development, and it might've been something.

  5. 1700lbs is actually crazy heavy for how small it is. The Suzuki Cappuccino is like 1400-1600 lbs, and that's with a 3cylinder + turbo + transmission + full gas tank. The Solo EV doesn't have a large battery to account for that much weight either, and it's an aluminum chassis. So where the heck is all the weight? must have super heavy doors or something.

As for the sudden power loss. On cheaper homebrew EV motors, if the voltage doesn't match the motor correctly, or if the motor overheats, it will just shut off until it cools down. Similar to vaper locking a gas engine. If you know what you're doing from an engineering perspective, this basically never happens with an EV, if it was built properlly. Whoever their engineers are either suck (doubt it), or like you said the whole cheaper than a lawsuit thing and they weren't getting the sales they wanted, so just canned it.

Also for a startup company, their building/head quarters was also insanely nice and huge. Like way overkill, which just adds to the company overhead. For 500 units, they should have just been a warehouse in Texas somewhere until they grew over the years.

I think the car is SUPER cool and ALMOST exactly what I want. Like I'm the target owner. BUT, the range is actually more like 80miles on highway, and I need at least 120-150 miles range. Also just like 20 more HP. I haven't had a single passenger in my car in like 7 years, that's how single and friendless I am haha. If I had one, I would "mod" mine with a lighter seat, lexan door windows, and some other little things here and there.

I do think cars like this will take off in the coming years. As battery and EV technology improves, a company building vehicles like this will be more and more viable.

  6. The love the Miata gets makes me feel good, when I played Aspec years upon years ago. That was the best car to start and except for licenses and gimic races it was the go-to for me.

  7. "People use their cars for different things depending on what day it is" kinda nullifies the previous "people more car bigger than they really need" declarative.
I'm one of the few people who actually owns a sedan, a pickup truck, and a work van, but I don't expect everyone else to go out and do that, so instead they go out and buy either a crossover, an SUV, or a four door truck to do more than one job. Everyone is such a weird nerd about the stuff that other people have sometimes.

  8. Ive seen these cars at the local mall all the time. I only ever saw one of these on the road and the same one parked randomly in a neighborhood near where i live.

  9. Don't get me wrong, I love cars, but I think the issues we have involving traffic, fuel prices and car prices can't be solved with a car like this. It'd probably be better fixed with a more robust, reliable and effective public transport system.

Again, I love cars as a feat of engineering and a work of art, but, as a tool needed in todays society, they need to be right for the job. You don't use a hammer when your need to put in a screw, so don't use a huge truck to take your kids to school. It's fine to use a truck if you are say working on a farm and need the off-road capability and bed to carry heavy items, but going to and from an office job? A bus makes more sense financially, environmentally and allows more people to travel to a destination with less traffic.

  10. Feels like the worst of both worlds. Not large enough to be a useful car and too big to be a versatile motorcycle. Also, how does this reduce traffic? You need more of them since each only seats one person and is'nt narrow enough to cause lane lines to be reduced if they became ubiquitous
