This is the story of Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. A brilliant man marred by pain and suffering. As tragic as some parts are, his life can teach us some valuable lessons.

  1. no matter what they say Manhattan project is the epitome of Physics. He is not a Physics guy who will do useless equation all day,. He make realistic things which directly effect people. And make a platform to work militaries government engineer and scientist together

  2. I always lean so much from your broadcast, thats must take a lot work. They always make me think , thank you! 😀🙏🙏👍👍👍👍❤❤

  3. Good video but man that justification of the bombings was straight out of American propaganda. Many people acknowledge that the Japan was close to surrendering and the reason to drop the bombs was the Soviets advancing in the west and they didn't want parts of Japan to come under Soviet influence.

  4. What are you talking sbout? Yoh keep showing the window claiming there are visible cracks but there are no cracks. Is it really possible that a circuit board may still be good after being submerged under thousands of feet of salt water for a week?

  5. The sad part is. After we made the bomb and scared everyone, We sold it to our enemies. Greed destroyed everything we worked for. Thank you government for making us less safe.

  6. You may have forgotten an African country that developed its own atomic bomb but never officially tested it due to pressure by the US to not do so.
I believe South Africa had built two atomic bombs and was one of the first countries to sign the nuclear non proliferation treaty..

  7. In his case it wasn't about giving up. He wanted fast results and became famous. Being greedy in scientific areas isn't unexpected but shouldn't be reframed afterwards.

  8. Yesterday I watched the Veratasium video on this same person.
His life is amazing, especially the struggle between his curiosity and the bad application of the goals he achieved as a curious man.
I think this is often a big dilemma of big minds – just look at Nobel and TNT.

I think the humanity has achieved great things!
However, due to greed and racism we have hindered our progress as humans.

We shall work together towards a more collaborative World, where we work towards common goals.
Yes, competition is great. But it does not have to cut thoughts out

  9. Very good and timely presentation.

The movie (highly recommended) goes into depth on issues lesser known that are mentioned in this video. A complex man shaped by (in turn also shaping) an intense period. He rightly warned that moving into higher capacity mega tonnes capabilities would result in a 'race' that also resulted in Tsar Bomba. What is worse is how the vaunted V2 Rockets would lead to missles technologies and systems to guide from outerspace that cause Dr Oppenheimer and others to fear human civilisation could self annihilate. It is ironic how science fiction like Terminator 3 [2003] depicts predictions set decades earlier albeit with Artificial Intelligence directing these technologies.

  10. There is no moral justification for using nukes, it is fundamentally opposed to what a just war is. I fear for his soul because he knew what was coming and made that choice just like Lucifer.

  11. IMO the actual driver for the Manhattan Project, although vastly less interesting, but extensively more impactful behind the scenes than half the scientists involved who the US military didn't trust was actually Vannevar Bush. He's the wizard behind the scenes making the setups and hiding in the shadow. The Manhattan Project was a child agency of the office (National Defense Research Committee) Bush oversaw.

  12. "The world we know will not be the same.
    Two people.. laughed.
    Two people cried.
    Most people were silent.

I remember the Hindu scripture the …
..the prince must do his duty.
And he said; Now I have become death. The destroyer of worlds.

I guess we all thought that, one way or another"

  13. Oppenheimer's issues sound like ADHD. If it was better understood back then, he could have been treated and become the equal of Einstien or Hawking. I'm glad Christopher Nolan's movie and the book it is based on, American Prometheus are bringing it to greater attention. Excellent video, a great companion to Veratisum's one.
