50 thoughts on “The Anti-Smartphone Revolution

  1. Minimising my internet usage felt like dropping a drug addiction.

At first you feel empty or that your missing out, you feel twitchy without that dopamine hit.

But after a week your mind is so much fresher, you’re mental health better and you feel just so much healthier.

    Great video.

  2. I think it's really about deleting useless apps.. I only have Twitter and reddit just for news and YouTube and Netflix for entertainment and Amazon for buying things..

  3. As an iOS developer with couple of apps on App Store and doing iOS development for work, I have been using a flip phone for more than 4 years.I do not own any smartphone 🙂

  4. I'd never heard anyone but my mom use the term "dumb phone" before (she uses it to mean flip-phone). Then, though I technically have a (low end) smart phone, I use it mostly as a "dumb" phone and made a point to remove all social media apps as soon as I got it. The only problem I have with my phone is forgetting to charge it because it stays out-of-sight-out-of-mind so much of the time.

  5. Me personally have deleted all my social media apps except messenger and YouTube I've also turned off all notifications. It has helped me somewhat. But the light phone is a tempting option also.

  6. Those are not dumb phones. They are simple. They don’t rob you of your time or have an agenda. We don’t need these depressing smartphones just to use meaningless applications and features. The more people use these phones, the more the restaurants and other places will adapt. These phones are what we should all have, they are great!

  7. If I get a Dumb Phone….I won't be able to use Spotify. 😂

For years, I have been trying to turn my phones into dumb phones by disabling everything except calls and text messages from known callers. I'm not even signed into iCloud and iMessage is off. I have to turn MMS and Cell Data on temporarily to receive pictures, but my life is much happier now. 😀

  8. I changed for a 20€ Nokia from Vodafone, I'm very happy about it.
Just for the record I'm 63 y.o. from Portugal.
I also gave up on social media, except YT. Mostly for news and documentaries.

  9. Just get a basic nokia, yall do know those are still being sold right?
This thing cost 500+, old school nokia costs about 30ish bucks.
This is still consumerism. Making a useless overprized product that "solves a problem" with a wayyy more expensive version of what already exists.
If you REALLY feel this is the only way you make the right choices, first of spend some more time on your self…like self control. Cuz al you had to do was delete the unwanted apps from your smartphone and only use that what you find handy. Like…i see no problem in having a camera. Otherwise i need to buy an extra camera just to take pictures. A calender is handy cuz i dont wanne carry around my bag all the time just for a paper one. Technology isnt evil, people just severly lack selfcontrol.
As perfectly demonstrated by these people buying a overprized phone, for a problem with the apps on it.
Just get rid of what you dont want on the phone you have.
But people please for richards sake, stop wasting hundreds of bucks in economically rough times. Buying more and more products to "perfectly fit whatever life style you want" cuz its almost always bullshirt.
Take a few seconds to calmly think about what your doing, before spending 500 bucks on a classical nokia knock off, while the orgininal nearly unbreakable nokia brick phones ARE STILL BEING SOLD FOR NEARLY THE SAME DAMN PRIZE ITS ALWAYS BEEN 30 BLOODY BUCKS. THATS 470 BUCKS LESS AND YOU STILL GET BOTH A CAMERA AND A CALENDER….
Dumbphone…dumb people wasting money cuz they sheep.

  10. In Sweden we have "BankID" Wich is a mobil verification system for everything the Swedish government does. Healthcare, school, banking and more. In Sweden you're REALLY limiting yourself for no reason by not using a smartphone.

  11. It's so stupid… You can create a "dumb" phone from a smartphone within a 3 minutes just by deleting all distracting app and adding focus mode. You will not lose all benefits like camera, navigation and banking and will not feel stupid in usual situation

  12. waaaaaaaaaawoooooooooooooooo
star pop? who is this girl?
not using internet made her feel better
    woooooooooaaaaaaaaaoooooowwwwwwww
    🤣
thanks to the internet i learned 500 things that i like /need
    now i work with internet_i have no school @ all… 😉
i think she was watching porn movies all the time
of course she needs a brake
    what a nonsense

  13. This will not work and should not. Technology is an integral part of our life with work completely built into our phones and workflow. Dumb phones are for people who are simply unable to have discipline, control or have extremely simple lives of their choosing. If you wish to go bankrupt in a day then please go ahead. Disconnect from clients and associates. Uninstall your work and server software from your phone and get a simple phone unable to effectively be really productive and useful at work.

What we should be doing instead is work towards a separation between work and personal life. Instead of trying to opt out of all these technologies that do make work and life better its best to lobby towards a barrier between electronics and simplicity in order to protect those who choose to have peace and quiet when and if they wish so and to improve social life and interaction. The fact is that we are simply too weak to have control over our life. We are too weak to decide to simply put those technologies down and spend the rest of the day without it. For the same reason we are too weak to stop drinking, smoking and taking drugs. Simple as that.

Next time we rush into such conclusions lets think – When our kids are being approached by a stranger….when your loved one is ready to have a stroke….and when emergency services are trying to reach you….when that crucial, life changing moment is about to hit you hard…..would you prefer to have all the technology possibly available to aid your efforts OR would you be ready to compromise all that for the sake of so called simplicity.

  14. I really hope this trend catches on, but I don't think ditching the whole smartphone is the solution. For example, I need my smartphone to do my personal finances, control my home automation, and respond to important work-related notifications only accessible by a modern OS. Like many others have said, we need to normalize ditching all of the druggie apps like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc.

Like I tell people in my life who struggle with this issue, the smartphone can be a tool if you use it correctly. The same goes for every other thing in life I suppose.

  15. This must be why all networks are suddenly shutting off 2G and 3G by next year. Great video.

I'll just get a CAT B40, it has no OS (not Android, Apple or KaiOS) just a basic proprietary 'OS' that lets you call, text and do basic functions like back in the day.

Android especially steals your whole life (writing, speech, data, local via Wi-Fi scanning). And there's also so many bad sides. Constant bombardment of bad news, fearmongering, lies and misinformation from news outlets and government's. Immediate access to ordering bad food, buying things you don't need, p.rn, heated debates/divisions on social media. All gone. Remember it's not a feature/dumb phone if it still has an OS with smartphone Apps.

  16. I personally don't use social media. All I use on my phone is Spotify, a calculator, my schedule and an equalizer.

I do really recommend ditching social media like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. It's a really nice experience overall.

  17. Most folks don't realize they can or know how to control the various Push Notification controls available to them on their devices: phones, laptops and PC's. I've been online since '91, connected up to the max since the first Smart Phones came out but thru the knowledge and experience of using the web, traditional programs and modern apps, I have complete control over the ads and notifications I get and though online 8+ hours each day, rarely see more than just a few per day. The tools are out there folks, use them, take control of your devices.

  18. Apple should launch a keypad dumbphone with fast and efficient software, processor, 5g.
But, it can't connect to useless social media sites.
    With the messenger app.
Good camera because you still want to store memories.
And as that woman said, be able to scan QR codes.

  19. I'm considering ditching my smart phone, but not because I want to lose the internet, that'd be crazy ;), but rather because I simply cannot find anything that can be used one-handed anymore. Even the iPhone mini is too big and they discontinued that because nobody wanted it.

  20. I'm 41 and never owned a smartphone in my life. I do own a tablet – I bought it a few years ago for reading e-books and streaming music and videos but it mostly just sits in storage because, as a "digital immigrant", pawing at a screen feels weird and roundabout to me and I can't seem to get used to it. So I only go online at home with my laptop (older business model). If I'm out and about, I'm always offline.
As far as cellphones go, I still use an old Nokia "dumb phone". It offers everything I need and it's even made in Hungary, not China!
This works perfectly for me and I will keep it that way as long as I can.

And yes, I even prefer old video games/consoles (SNES etc.) and tube TVs 🤣

  21. Personally, I'm fine with things the way they are. Smartphones already give you the ability to control how much an app can try to get your attention. If you don't want an app pinging you, you can just disable notifications from it either in part so if you find some things from that app important enough that you want it to alert you, you can leave those notifications on. Or you can just outright stop all notifications from that app. You can also disable the audio notifications (at least on Android) so if you still want to see the notifications but you don't want to be immediately notified, that's an option. So for social media I turn off all notifications that don't explicitly mention me and I put those notifications specifically on silent. Direct messages I leave on. And then all other on my phone except for the Calendar, Texts, Calls and the Alarm Clock are disabled.

  22. I would love to drop my smartphone but its not an option for me 🙁 in my job, I need to use a vpn in my laptop and in order to activate it I need a mobile token accesible only through a smartphone. It really sucks because as long as I am dependent on a corporate job, probably I will also need to stick with smartphones.

  23. One of the worst things about smartphones is employers etc expect you to do stuff in your free time off work, 24/7 availability, call, online meetings, relentless “can you work today” guilt trips, so many jobs today it’s nearly impossible to “leave work”. They always expect you to be available.

  24. I mean, it's not like you can't do everything that you do on a smartphone in a computer. So why bother ditching them? You're just going to be wasting the same time in a laptop or pc

  25. I too use feature phone and smart phone also…my sim is in feature phone….because the apps sometimes read One time passwords automatically without permission.

  26. Get two phones!!!!! one is smart and expensive and you take it to the office or you keep it at home. Maybe your grand daughter can keep an eye on it and if it rings, she can call you to your second phone, the one you take to jogging, shopping etc. One cost 30 dollars and you carry it everywhere. Hell, buy 3 and keep one on the glove compartment

  27. My smartfone is a smarterfone. My voice mail says to email me, without giving my email address. Anyone who may contact me will know this. I do NOT answer my fone. They know to email me. I use my fone only for outgoing calls, very rare. I use my fone as a body cam for safety at times. I use it for my smart watch, health momitoring. That is basically it.

Oh and I have the Nokia, sentimental reasons.

I do have apps, but basically do not use them.

To sum up, I basically have a camera, video camera, which also has fone and app functions.

  28. i use my smartphone for taking a picture, paying a bills (electric/water/cabel),checking mail, watching You Tube and making a call/sms…as long i dont join any social media like twitter/instagram,whatapps,tiktok,fb and mobile gaming .i think im fine

  29. The smart phones aren't the problem!!
    Social media is!
Since I have uninstalled all social media my notifications disappeared too and thanks to my smartphone I have learned Javascript with the spare time.
It's an amazing device, you just need a little self control.

  30. Well I don't need to switch to a dumb phone because I use the smartphone own features to control my use of it and I'm not anxious to see what's up with anyone or anything all the time.

I also turn off notifications I don't like and were overwhelming me before (like a lot of Facebook stuff), especially on the lock screen, and limited my use of some apps by time using the wellness app from Google.

Personally, since I live in a foreign country with a language in not fluent in, I need the help of apps to communicate, find things and place and navigate to them and connect with my close family which are in a different continent, so I need the phone smart, but being a 70s child, I'm used to how it was before smartphones so I'm not suck in it as much as, I guess millennials are…

P.s. I have two phones, one is from work and had always, since they gained popularity had two and I don't mind it as well – one is personal and the other, provided by workplace is for work and I miss them when I need quiet – anyone can do that if they decide to
