31 thoughts on “5 minutes from Cannonball Glory – all the prep but NO LUCK

  1. At 17 y/o (1977) I drove my finely tuned and worked 1972 Harvest Gold MGB w/ O/D gear from Long Island NY to LA (Westchester by the airport) by myself without any radar detector in 51 hours. Only 2 tickets. On Will Rogers Tpk clocked 128 mph but the cool State Police Officer wrote me up for 80 mph and wanted to look under the hood while talking about his Vett. I had so much fun. Left on a Friday night. Arrived Sunday afternoon. I have always wanted to do a real Cannonball run but never got the chance.

  2. I'm from southern germany and got some "Autobahn" experience. Driving since 2006 in Europe and here. The most important are not the engine power or the stealth optic of the car in my opinion. It's about the brakes and the tires!

  3. I have been reading about the Cannonball since the first one done over 50 years ago in Car & Driver magazine and have read about over the years the many attempts and breaking of the records. In September, when on a cross country trip (21 days from northern NJ to that point), I visited the western terminus with its sign, taking a picture with my car.
Like many, I believe the absolute lowest times done during the pandemic will never be broken as much less traffic, construction suspended, many cops not working due as sick or limit risk of illness and need to enforce pandemic restrictions. Even when they were done during the pandemic, they were breaking pandemic restrictions on interstate and in-state travel.
I just hope someone far less prepared, with less skilled drivers, not a proper vehicle doesn't try it and end up killing themselves or others ruining the so far record of none in the attempts.

  4. -dear bambas ad from the beginning, I couldn't care less about homeless people getting new socks for free, and would rather my purchase had nothing to do with subsidizing your altruistic shtick.

  5. "Spotters" ? Hell – sounds like y'all need could've used a few "snipers" out there … dude takes his family hostage on the freeway.
    Man ain't that a bitch!

  6. Cool story and two of the all-time great great German Highway missles, the D4 Audi S8 plus w/605 hp and the F90 M5 Competition w/617 hp.

  7. Beating the china flu time is going to be extremely hard to beat just having to deal with traffic your all ready behind the 8 ball.
    Those times are still impressive,seriously.

  8. Driving thru Texas, where speed limit is 85, I was pulled over for going 86. Patrol guy read me the riot act , that 85 means 85, not 86 and he thinks 85 is far to fast anyways and doesn't agree with it. He was .. Piisssseeeeddddd. But gave me a warning after 20 minutes of bitching.

He was oncoming on the other side when he saw me and drove thru the ditch and came up behind me. I think he was originally pulling over for no front plate and I'm from AZ where we don't do that crap, so when he saw my state behind me, he decided to say he clocked at 86. Motor officer, no mounted radar and he was driving so no radar gun in hand.

  9. Woah. Gotta give you guys props. Almost all of the electronics Cannonball guys use is commercial off the shelf shit, but I spotted an Adafruit product in a few of the pictures. Kudos for engineering your own shit! I'd love to know more.

  10. VinWiki family I need some suggestions. I want to buy a decent radar/laser detector for my car. I live in Pennsylvania why I’m not absolutely sure what the state police use but I know they can read speed ahead of them and behind them. What’s a decent unit to buy that’ll alert to most equipment law enforcement uses?

  11. My heart goes out to this team, the planning, the cost, the three trys… Just to drive across the country at the speed limit is a bucket list item for me. The road condition, the traffic levels, the price, I doubt that anyone will ever beet the times that were made durring Covid 19. I salute any and all who have a dream and try for it, they have a story for the rest of their lives, even if they came second, they know that only one team was better, which makes them better than EVERY ONE ELSE!

  12. These Covid era records might go down as unbeatable. The advantage of having almost entirely empty roads for those few months are an advantage that just may not come around again for awhile, no matter how effectively the rest of the plan is able to come together. Great story!

  13. I'm perpetually loving all the cannonball content.
Been fascinated with cannonball since that article I can't find from a early 80s car and driver or road and track of the editors that bought an old dodge police car, put a couple radar detectors in it and did a cannonball.
