TDE was once my and many other’s FAVORITE label in Hip Hop. Whether it was artists like SZA, AbSoul, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Zaywop or Rock – they had something for everyone. However, in recent years… Things have simply not been the same. And in my opinion, it all started with the signing of Reason. Although he’s an artist who clearly has massive potential – he seemingly failed to generate the amount of hype his contemporaries had. But – after a recent podcast appearance on @BACKONFIGGG – it seems like the truth was unveiled. In a heated dispute between Reason and TDE’s *new* co-president Moosa, Reason claimed that TDE was holding back his music, and even referred to Moosa as a “liar” and a “master manipulator” – after Moosa claimed that Reason was falsely pointing the finger and blaming his label wrongfully. ALOT to unpack here, I spent a long time writing this one…
This video is titled “How 1 Rapper Destroyed Hip Hop’s Favorite Label (TDE)” but its important to note that the label itself also had a lot to do with the downfall as well.

I've had no issues with Reason. He has a lot of music I like. TDE has had issues with shit as you see Rashad and KDot for a minute had songs but TDE had issues releasing

Reason doesn’t have a standout quality, pretty run of the mill lyricist and just from listening to his interviews he’s pretty corny. I can almost guarantee the rest of the label thought he was a lame. Still doesn’t make it right how things happened for him, but he wasn’t a good mesh
Reasons I think reason didn’t pop like the rest of them.
1. I think because top dog was a smaller label with a small group of people working, and when their main artists popped everyone got lit from it. So they technically didn’t have to do anything for anyone because they already created an endless amount of revenue through their base artists.
Which was a lot out money for the individuals who split it up because it was fewer people than a major label.
2. Because he was hired by a member of the labels family it was probably done as a favor. And it was an unspoken sink or swim situation. Like here’s your budget, and here’s the label name do what you got to.
But that’s my opinion, even ab, school boy and rock took the back seat after Kendrick then sza, I remember when their albums came out after good kidd and everyone bought because they wanted to hear Kendrick and his boys not the artist himself unless they were a core fan of black hippie like myself.

Reason fumbled the bag, I would have kept focus and kept my head down and kept pushing to link with them. I think reason got lazy and took the complain card a lot quicker than he should have.
If TDE signed me they would have had to throw me out and get a protective order to stay away because that would have lit a jet flame under my ass.

I like Reason because he's familiar. Everybody in every hood in America knows a guy like Reason. Saying he's ordinary or not special is a compliment to how relatable he is to a certain following.

People forget it the music BUSINESS. These companies want to make a profit and that is the ultimate goal.
If an artist doesn’t have what it takes to be successful then they won’t invest.
Reason has no excuses in this day and age he could have easily dropped music his way on multiple platforms. He could have created viral videos showing his skill set a an MC. But he chose to sit and hope for T.D.E to do all the work. Can’t do that in 2025 this isn’t the 90’s dawg!
