In this episode we explore the significance of landrace cannabis strains in understanding modern genetics, their origins, benefits, and how they have shaped today’s hybrid strains. We discuss the misperceptions surrounding genetics in cannabis, comparisons to the music industry regarding cultural saturation, and the need for preserving these original strains to maintain genetic diversity and quality.

46 thoughts on “Why Landrace Strains Still Matter: Pure Genetics & Where They Come From – FTS Podcast Ep.230”

  1. I know this is an old video, but you guys have to try to work out a landrace pheno hunt over seas. Id love too, haven't looked at the logistics of such a venture. Landrace is where its at, been collecting from Khalifa Genectics. Can't wait to get more experience and dialed in. Start my own breed. Keep up the good work.

  2. Google is wrong. Landraces are domestic and have been worked on for hundreds of years in a spacific region that was chdeveloped for their effects and adapted to regional growing conditions. Even Wikipedia gets this right. Google makes it sound "wild" or "feral". It is not. Ditchweed is feral not wild and not a landrace. Good conversation though.

  3. 30:14 can you please dive deeper into what strains were made from Durban Poison? I have tried GSC from Fast Buds – it was 10grams but I still remember it after many years. More Durban Poison! I am a slowpoke (sleepy strains would make me disfunctional because i am already sleepy in general, so I need to get rd of that sleepiness), and I need it for my lessons. PS Indica with sativa effects would be fun to discuss too.

  4. 5yrs ago I started a field of blue dream, skunk#1, runtz , Bohdi's deepline alchemy 13, gorilla bubble, nepal jam, bangi haze, and let them all pollinate each other over and over and over selecting for smells, resins, strutures, and pm spidermite resistance. I make some strong mct tinctures.

  5. It’s crazy how there’s another prohibition of cannabis in 2026 regarding seeds.. “There is a significant federal shift underway that will ban or severely restrict most intoxicating hemp products and affect seed/genetics markets by late 2026”

Why do we move backward in America?

  6. If we look into Prohibition of cannabis, I’m curious to know how many genetics and seed strains were displaced or even lost because growers got locked up or hid underground back in the day. Generations of genetic history lost because of some political nonsense..

  7. See, weed has become a total commodity like f'n toilet paper. You think that dispensaries could make the kind of money by having the small amount of landraces of yesteryear that there were only so many of to begin with….what maybe 10 or so in total that I know about….you know the names. People want the latest and greatest 'great sounding' names that they think will give them that high they've been chasing. People go back and back and back to their dispensaries because they want the new kid on the block. If landraces were available, dispensaries would only be doing a fraction of the business they're doing now with people chasing the high with some incredidly delicious sounding name (that's mostly bullshit)….that they can't get anymore like they did in the early days.

  8. Dude, you made a stupid statement. OBVIOUSLY the hybrids came ORIGINALLY from landraces….what we have today (the hybrids since landraces are nowhere to be found anymore like for example the old school Colombian Gold which was better than anything out there in today's hybridized world where profits are king not the quality of the bud)

  9. I think what we need is to go back to the drawing board and scrub every non-landrace strain from existence. Start from scratch and mix them more intelligently, and more importantly, don't mix them whimsically. Just enough to fill in every slot, focused entirely on sifting through phenos for different primary terpene ratios, without compromising by mixing for what is the easiest to grow or what produces the biggest buds. That is where we went wrong, because it has become less about chemistry and more about trying to push for maximum yield, which is antithesis to the medicinal aspects of a cannabinoid profile.

  10. Most strains are hybridized to the point of everything being basically the same. All you have to look at is terpene profiles. The real truth is there is only one sativa terpene: Terpinolene. That's it. Limonene, Pinene, both are basically nothing. You'll get more of that in you by eating an orange or drinking a pine needle tea, and you don't really get high off that do you. They don't perk you up, they just don't get you sedated like Humulene or Linalool. They're more for flavor than effects. Even Myrcene and Caryophyllene don't really have any effects other than regulating other terpene effects / allowing for more cannabinoid uptake across the blood brain barrier. But I think in reality, there are a lot of minor cannabinoids (the stuff that comes in at amounts too small to bother showing measurements of) that sets the stage for the actual effects of a strain. This is proven by taking two strains that have almost the same primary terpene ratios, but still end up having different effects.

  11. I disagree if i create a new strain i don't need you to know what I bread I just need you to like it giving up the genetics is the reason why you have so many of the fake strains out there

  16. Omg!! Let go on a long landrace episode!! Have been doing research on the recipe for skunk, og kush, cookie, pineapple express, and am in process of remaking all of them. Lets hear about the landraces, and landrace hybrids!!!

  17. Guys have acapulco gold from bodhi. Have santa marta gold from reeferman. Have 2 afganis that are next door neighbors in afganistan. Have conflicting stories of which is in it. So i put them both in it. She just got finished. Fall 2026!! Yooperskunk!!

  18. I have yet to see a true sativa in a recreational shop. I bet if you randomly picked a rec shop and tested every one of their strains there would be zero true Sativa’s. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, true sativas were available based on one’s feeling and energy level afterwards. They’re now all couch weed. I believe the only way to get a true sativa is to purchase seeds from someone reputable like the Real Sees Company, Ace Seeds, or CannaBioGen. Or maybe look at some of Snowhigh’s longer flowering sativas (preferably 16-24 week flowering strains). It’s unfortunate as most real sativas are sold in Europe as the US is focused on profit so they don’t want to take the time to grow a true sativa. It’s kinda sad!

  19. Retired American here living in Thailand. Started growing about a year ago with some seeds the Thai guy at the local plant nursery gave me (sativa I think). They grow nice make great tea and also smoke smooth and a great high. Not sure if land race but I am super happy with them😊
