Ad ‚We [humans] have something‘: we have a complex communication system (known as human language) that allows us to condense and spread information so effectively, that we can learn a whole lot – not necessarily as individuals, but as a whole. We are constantly feeding each other with information about ourselves and the world, which strengthens our theory of mind, which, in turn, strengthens our imagination, I believe. About what could be. I believe, language makes the whole difference – and yes, there are also complex animal communication systems. Nobody built Rome in a day and not alone, we needed complex communication. As a linguist, I might be biased.
Also, I am not at all disagreeing with Arcus. Despite our complex communication gift, we are neither ‚smarter‘ than other animals nor more skilful or valuable. At least not on an individual level, I don’t think so. So we should respect them as much as we respect each other – and respect each other more too.
What a great guy too. Prime example of ‚don’t judge a book by its cover‘. It is not fair to him or anybody else, but I did not expect such coherent ideas and values from a man with his hairstyle. And nothing against his hairstyle either.
But Geck is right, you can invent any word you like. Language does follow rules, but we don’t have to actively enforce them. Your new word will be taken up and bent by the existing rules, cause we will generalise the rules onto it. Nothing one has to think of consciously. Also, the rules can and will change with time.
