43 thoughts on “Subscriptions Are Getting Out of Control

  1. My 1947 Austin 10 is not subscription based in any way and driving it is the purest form of joy I know. I smile like a lunatic and I travel in a bubble of smiling bystanders.
Try it…especially now that the entirely disinterested “investor” pukes are vacating the market and prices are returning to enthusiast owner driver territory. Ditch the brands and join us proles!😂

  2. I've had a few subscriptions to things I don't "need", like movie channels. Generally if I like a song or movie, I'll buy the hardware. I learned Photoshop in college, but without consistent income, I stopped at Photoshop 13 (CS6) and learned other non-sub graphic progs. Subscriptions make sense in some cases, like a printing business needing to restock supplies. But to "lease" my home printer? Or my favorite media? Even if I download a purchased song I'm going to make sure I can play it any time in perpetuity, because I bought the property.

  3. The only subscription I pay for is Comedy Bang Bang. Scotty Aux has earned my 6 bucks a month. Everything else is either pirated, or I own outright like DaVinci Resolve and Studio One 7.

  4. You do not understand Mr Cold Fusion. The line must go up, the shareholders need their 5th apartment complex they can't rent or turn into AirBnBs, they need their 7th vacation to Monaco this year. Don't be so prude and selfish, THEY NEED THIS, nay, THEY DESEVE IT!

  5. I had to chat with someone in Netflix so that they remove my fucking credit card from their system…
They made that so damn hard that it made me just don't even consider to subscribe again

  6. They could get away with it, and be making a fortune but are greedy. They would rather have the few wealthy pay the 20$ a month and not notice, rather than have everyone subscribe for 2$.

  7. Thing is on subs you don't have to keep them and often you're better off for it. Myself end of last year pared down what I sub to and what I do not. Saving a bundle. They will see in a big way when half of us refuse to participate in this anymore exactly how much we support them. By the time your subs have ended you have killed all good will you got with your customer and never will get it back. All of that just takes time.

  8. When I was a child, my parents would say, " Watch the pennies, and the dollars will take care of themselves." Now the corporations even want your pennies.

  9. The take away I get from all these stories is that companies will do anything shady in order to pursue higher and higher revenue growth to appease their shareholders. Many of those shareholders are you and me, if you own a 401k and put your money in a fund. Our economic system will always lean towards unchecked growth and so regulating subscriptions models is just a quick fix, the underlying motivation to do it will always be there. And, companies with more money than the consumer will always launch ads and hire lobby groups to remove the restrictions when no one notices.

  10. Subscriptions are ok when they solve a problem and are convenient. If I want to remotely heat up my car or open garage door it's ok to charge for the infrastructure because your app needs to be updated and server needs to send the signal when I press a button in the app but also I should be able to host this myself. New car car service is something which works for decades, you get X years or km free service and same thing should be with features that cost money. We don't expect car companies to service out cars for 2 decades for free but we expect working app for free forever. There is a space where subscriptions are ok but not for heated car seats or printers or a fucking juice press😀

  11. I really feel like the solution to 95% of this is just ditch the subscriptions. None of them are vital to your life and there are free, cheap, or at least non-exploitative alternatives. Movies and TV shows you already own, that you can borrow from friends, get from the library, or just watching YT with an adblocker on. You had lots of music before you went over to Spotify so you could needlessly access all the music that ever existed and listened to your favourites anyway. For the cost of one year's gym membership, you can buy weights, a bench, and a few other necessities and work out for free in the comfort of your own home, it doesn't even require that much space. You have hundreds of games in your backlog. All of this without even mentioning piracy.

We're just so addicted to the convenience that we can't see the slightest step "back" or additional hurdle as anything but insurmountable. This isn't an excuse for these business practices, it's a way out. These companies have gone insane and we really don't need to do much to put them in their place. The few exceptions like printer ink for a company are rare and need to be dealt with directly.

Cancel all of your subscriptions. Do not purchase things that require an app or ongoing commitment to companies that see you as a pay pig. You will still be able to enjoy quality entertainment and conveniences with a tiny bit of effort that you won't even notice in a few months.
