The modern classroom is going through a crisis at the moment. Kids are graduating highschool without the ability to read, but why is this the case? In this episode we explore.

49 thoughts on “Why Can’t Kids Read These Days?”

  1. What I know to be true in Asperger, ADHD, is far higher and goes without being diagnosed deliberately by many governments. This is a partial genetic situation as the genetic link is proven. So if your parents don't value education it moves forward in a predicable pattern. Mobile and screen use exacerbates this. Many children with poor writing and reading skills would turn to the arts for expression. Now it is scrolling or screen time. Many boys develop later and need to acknowledge their immaturity before working out how to change. Some will struggle on.
If not helped people turn to despair, crime and drug use. Not all some. Suicidal tendencies can be a spiral downwards. I could read, never really wanted to till I turned 16, my mother tried, but I never remembered what I learned the day before as a young child. No engagement, no enthusiasm. In adulthood I corrected this. I have an IQ over 147.

  2. I feel like we (can say this as an Gen-Z person) have lost the ability to think rationally by losing what's the primary source of learning: parents teaching their kids about life, attitude and other things. And no school can change that.

  3. Former teacher here. Gen Z and future generations are destined to be slaves of AI, SuperCapitalism and the Corpo takeover.

People, get ready for CyberPunk 2077 to become the reality you’ll live in. And the irony, is that it’ll happen way before 2077.

Common Core was the catalyst of the downfall.

Keep believing your favorite politicians and celebrities, it’ll do wonders for ya.

  4. Your example of Singapore is inaccurate. Standardised testing is now even higher stakes and more important than ever. They now grade on bell curves, so a single mark will mean you miss out on the school you want to go to, where in the past you would make it. Extra curriculars and activities are mandatory bolt ons. There is no conversation if you don't make the grade, difference now is top schools want both perfect grades and extra curricular competition results. Lastly, the current trend is for employers to ask which secondary(high) school you went to, or even which primary school. The right alumni is the difference between a million dollar job and the bare minimum. All schools are segregated by grades, and for ordinary Singaporeans, their entire future is decided by the national exam at 12 years old. Top corporate executives have their respective school days where they don the uniforms of their alumni and go to work. Sounds ridiculous, but they all wear with pride. Stakes have never been higher and are only accelerating from here.

  5. This did not just originate with Gen Alpha.

Gen Z was truly the first generation I realized that does not have strong problem-solving, numeracy or reading comprehension skills. Many them think they do, but they don’t. Parents are afraid to admit that their child is remedial and should be held back while teachers are afraid to exercise authority and recommend holding back or suggesting intensive classes for students who have fallen behind.

As a Millennial it’s actually quite scary for me to admit this because I could see that
decline happening between myself and my Gen Z youngest sibling.

  6. as 31yo adult, this is HELLA important 19:24 instead of learning about the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell,
It took me 10.000 USD in debt to finally learn how the hell the banks and all those things works,
we need to teach kids how to properly save and use their money, even if the jews opposes and wants us ignorants.

  7. …the world has too many rules. The children cannot find a clear path. There are so many seriously punished rules that children cannot feel safe enough to learn topics that aren't immediately fight or flight related or just dumb and fun.

If the govs and courts were not so authoritarian the kids would be free to develop practical skills instead of speech skills, knowledge of real things would be more valuable if the world cared more about valuing humans instead of merely their economic output.

  8. If you have teachers in the US autonomy over learning they would have the kids watch movies all day! They already do this when the kids have been good and earn a “ free period” they reward them by turning on Shrek or some other movie. I have a friend who is a teacher and when she said when she is hung over “ I just pop in a movie so I can get through first period”

  9. I have a son in school in Texas and every year the number one priority of the entire staff is preparing for the STAAR. I also have a son in school in Florida and had a safety issue I needed to speak to the school counselor about. She couldn’t schedule a call with me until two weeks later because she was busy helping with testing!!??

  10. On common teaching standards: I firmly believe that diversity enables strength. We aren’t the same, why do we have to follow a national or global standard. Let schools decide how to teach. The curriculum needs to be agreed, the rest can be left to local deciders.

  11. As much as I agree with most of the content of this video, I think using examples of British children seemingly from an upper class private school (probably filtered by coherent responses from the editing team too) compared with random street interview with the dumbest bloke they found that day is not really an apples to apples comparison. I'm sure you could do the same today if you went to a fancy private school.

  12. So the smart stay smart, it's the low educated ones that drop. Seems like a righting of the system to a previous state where there are less educated people overall who control the world. Wonder if it was intended…

  13. I remember for years on end being painfully aware that school was a waste of time, that I would never use any of what I was learning, and my post-school life has proved me right and, as an adult, I get the impression that school is really just to keep kids busy and off the streets. They don't really teach anything useful for day-to-day life past the age of maybe 12-14 if you're not pursuing a specialized career.

  14. The purpose of the system is what it does. The dumbing down of the population was the objective of conservatives in the US since desegregation. The people in power are very afraid of educated people, especially if those educated people are black.

  15. As an educator I can tell you that many of us feel as if we're made to choose between appeasing our admin or doing best by our students. Our administrators are motivated by "data" despite lacking the most basic understanding of statistical data as it pertains to what it is capable of. Instead of understanding that data is not truth by any means. In education and when used to make inference regarding students performance it is merely a very imprecise and subjective measure of assessment scores not a measure of intelligence. I think it's laughable when anyone believes that intelligence, or mastery, or understanding can be objectively measured simply by sitting in the back of a classroom for 5-15 minutes on any given day. This, in and of itself, assumes that the process of understanding is occurring in real time anytime a student is looking in the direction of the teacher or seeming to be participating in some activity. Not only that, but it assumes that intelligence is quantifiable in a universal, boxed in, and rigid manner that can be identified just as rigidly.

The administrators I've worked with that have exhibited competency in their roles seem to share a common belief that the trend that is "data driven education" is, at best, a slightly more informed system of attempting to making decisions that impact learning to some degree by using imperfect data obtained from assessments that are incapable of measuring all types of intelligence exhibited by all types of people.

Students have been born into a technologically inspired "brain rot" society which seems to be responsible for ongoing declines in literacy, attention spans, ,changes in their physiological and cognitive development, and more. It seems to have created somewhat of a negative feedback loop whereas students are struggling to maintain their attention, the competition for their attention continues to have been won over by social media, and their dopaminergic reward systems are hijacked by the unpredictable positive reinforcement that is likes/notifications/etc , and so they are failing to develop foundational skills. The effect only grows in magnitude as students progress to each subsequent grade level while failing to continually develop basic reading, writing, and mathematical foundations.

I've noticed a very ongoing and progressive change in how students approach solving mathematical problems that seems as if instead of learning many-most students attempt to replicate problems they're shown instead of learning the logic and reason for any given operation or function. If there are identical problems in an assessment that had been reviewed in class most students will get it right. Although, make the slightest deviation in any part of the problem and nearly all of them get it wrong. It's a very frustrating and sad time in education that I desperately hope will be taken seriously at a national level as I cannot imagine how we'll survive in a competitive society amongst countries that have been surpassing us for decades now in nearly every area of technology and science.

  16. There's this guy Nils Voren who says he remembers fragments of a future timeline, and some of his descriptions in The Hidden Signal feel way too close to where the world is heading. His theories about aliens, manifestation and the structure of reality are next-level crazy.

  17. @2:01 – You've unfortunately made a serious mistake here – those children are easily identifiable by any British person, as very well educated, and likely very priviliged / upper class children. Their accents and manner of speech indicate that they are highly likely to have had the very best private education, and probably also private tuition at home – as well as having parents / family / friends etc. who spoke that way to them too.

Some of the other 'modern' examples you used, sounded like less well-educated, poorer, less well-spoken people, which again, a native Briton would be able to identify, just from their accent and manner of speech.

Therefore, drawing any conclusions between the way the two groups speak, given the highly stratified, and heavily class-divided British education system, can only tell you about relative advantages that the upper-class 1960s kids had, over their less priviliged modern counterparts, rather than being able to extrapolate any wider differences, simply based on the respective eras in which they were born.

  18. Genuinely we will never forget what have we done to gen z because we bully them and blame them as a I pad kid when they use a LITRAL i pad when they use it on a good purpose even if they are actually smart 🤞🏼😔

  19. If these kids can't read, then what are they doing on their phones? They HAVE to be consuming some text or articles or stuff like that to SOME extent, right? Or are they just watching endless videos and slop? Even if they're playing games, the games should have instructions, cues or buttons in text??
