13. I didn't have a brain injury, but I had 8 operations in 3 years from an injury in the Army, so I was in the hospital or immobile in my home and hooked up to IV's. I saw no one except for my kids, and a nurse that came by, and doctors appointments that my kids loaded me up to take me to. It really messed me up. I could not go in public when it was over, and it took me many years of counseling programs to get my head strait.

31. The original Giants in America series led me down a path of personal study of Native American history and Mound Builder culture. Seems the European settlers that first surveyed the Ohio river valley saw the remnants of an amazing culture and promptly plowed over and looted most of it. It seems discoveries were a curiosity but not fully and scientifically appreciated. The question that one asks themselves, is it possible the Smithsonian covered all these giant bone discoveries up? It seems a grand conspiracy, and wouldn’t a giant skeleton discovered have value and be displayed by the PT Barnum types of the era? And won’t some bones eventually be discovered in an attic somewhere? The fact these giant bones were covered in multiple papers and generally not front page news, makes me believe this wasn’t done to sell papers. Most Americans of European extraction at the time were likely aware of Giants in the biblical context, persons were aware a previous civilization existed, and believe most saw the Native Americans as a primitive people whose ‘time has come’. A common them in all these discoveries, is that the bones sent to Smithsonian for study and nothing more heard. For that reason, there seems to be a ‘there’ there to me. I am sure in many cases the bones were in poor condition and not preserved well. I do believe the US was highly focused on protecting our geographic holdings, our manifest destiny, and ensuring no others had claims to this land. The Smithsonian simultaneously served as the preserver and documentarian of the legacy America was creating. The prospect of an ancient evolved race of giants with a great civilization predating the Native Americans our policies were eradicating, or the potential this prior civilization was from the Old World could ignite others claims to this land. Couple that with the eugenics popular among many scientists of the time, I believe these discoveries may have been taken and boxed away by the Smithsonian if they didn’t fit the desired historical narrative.

Mr. Hancock is repeating Eurocentric ideologies that claim the lost civilization of "Atlantis" was the source of ancient knowledge, including pyramid-building and other cultural advancements. He implies that the inhabitants of this mythical place were of European descent and that they passed their knowledge and religion to the Egyptians and the peoples of the Americas. This narrative is not based in truth and perpetuates a misleading view of history.
