When optimizing yield, bud density, and quality, different defoliation techniques can be used to redirect energy and resources to cannabis buds. Among the many defoliation methods that growers consider, schwazzing and lollipopping cannabis are two popular yet contrasting techniques. In this video, we’ll break down these defoliation methods, compare their results, and uncover why one method outshines the other.

Defoliation is the selective removal of leaves from cannabis plants. By trimming excess foliage, growers aim to improve airflow, reduce the risk of mold, and expose lower buds to more light. However, each defoliation technique has its nuances, and understanding their impacts is crucial for achieving optimal results.

Schwazzing involves a heavy-handed removal of fan leaves. Usually performed right before flowering and then again around the third week, this method promises enhanced light penetration and increased energy directed toward buds. Proponents claim this boosts yield and bud quality.

However, our comparison revealed stark differences. Schwazzing didn’t just underperform compared to lollipopping; it yielded the worst results among all tested techniques, including doing nothing at all. The excessive leaf removal appeared to stunt plant growth and lead to fewer nutrients reaching the developing buds.

In contrast, lollipopping focuses on removing lower branches and leaves, creating a ‘lollipop’ shape. This technique ensures that the plant’s energy concentrates on developing the upper canopy buds, improving their quality while reducing the production of lower, smaller buds (commonly called ‘larf’).

Overall, the results are seen in the video and I would choose the defoliation technique strategically, based on the information I know on the bud structure on the strain.

For strains prone to producing larfy buds, lollipopping effectively reduces waste and results in denser, higher-quality colas. However, when compared to regular, minimal defoliation practices, lollipopping can sometimes reduce overall yield, as fewer buds are produced due to the concentrated focus on the upper canopy.

  1. As I have explained in comments below, the noticeable differences in bud structure and density from the 3 defoliation methods were drastic enough for me to distinguish and conclusively make my own opinion. However, if you feel like you could do a better experiment, by all means, please do so and share your findings.

  2. Awesome video! I wonder if a combination of schwazzing and lollipopping might help push production and main bud sites.
Maybe I don’t understand things enough lol but I think that instead to lollipopping to the top 2 inches, we can leave more bud sites and branches (suckers?) and defoliate only leaves that aren’t getting light, like on the bottom and inside.
I’m new so 🤷‍♂️ but I’m trying it outdoors. Going for max quality bud sites. And like you said, gotta know your strain and what it wants. So my gg is going tall and my og kush is growing shorter and very bushy and I’m trying to work just use intuition and hope it works.
If you read this, much appreciated 😂 Happy growing ❤❤❤❤❤

  3. very cool video. But have you done this with 3 separate plants but same genetics? Because all in one makes me wonder how things may be different with a plant for each of the methods.

  4. bro ofc if you cut some buds/fan leaves on bottom / middle plant "lolly pop" the energy will reverted toward existing buds ending up having more mass on other buds but you loose mass since you need lolly pop, so you loose material to increase size, we know nowdays that cutting 2 entire branch increase THCA by more or less 2-3% on all your other buds ofc you loose 2x branch

  5. Put a number on that in contrast with time vs leaving it alone… I mainly would want adequate airflow with little maintenance but time saved would be the deciding factor.

  6. Lollipop and get all the power to the top buds that go fuller cycle vs newer, underdeveloped. IMO lollipop all but top few (2-4) nodes til flower, then clean up new growth and maintain those good buds the full cycle. After the first 3-4 weeks (I prefer 2-3 weeks and being ahead vs late and lose time) most new growth or undergrowth will be underdeveloped. Most flower cycles do the most in the 2-5 week period and then just fatten up and get dense/trichomes rest of time til they get milky and amber.
