OpenAI’s Sora has shown us that the future has arrived. But how did it come to be? What can it do? and what are the implications of such an AI system? In this episode we’ll find out.

  1. As always you make a great to watch video – your videos are among a short list of my favorites! You said there will always be a place for great actors, producers, cinematographers, etc… and I agree but you said "perhaps we will raise the bar" and that got me – most movies made over well, almost forever really and truly suck! That is being nice by the way.

The problem is that a good movie is a truly enjoyable experience, one that is a gift from our modern world. But the lazy writing, editing, everything, just pathetic. It would be great if AI "gets this right" and somehow writes better stories, more gripping scenes, better twists and surprise endings. If that happened holly would wood have to "step up" and only make worthy content.

And by the way, I am not a snob, I am not smart enough to be one! I actually do like many lowbrow movies, etc… and actually don't know that much about movies from prior generations, or any other times. I just know that from what I have personally seen, no matter what era the movie was made I feel consistently let down. But I still watch movies, hoping to find a new gem.

I also don't like what AI has in store for humanity – if AI goes where it looks like it is going, the "rich" people don't need as many of us around to keep the status quo for them. So now the problem of "how to get rid of 6-7-8 Billion people in a way that won't stink up the joint and still allow them their luxury condos and yachts, global vacations, the finest in dining, clothing, etc.

  2. It’s interesting how history repeats itself on some level. When photography came on the scene, many people at the time said photography was not art. After all, the only talent was pushing a button on a machine. Anyone could do that, and the true artists were painters, sculpters, etc.

Now fast forward to simply typing a prompt into a computer and it creates a video. Anyone can do that.

Ansel Adams was not just pushing a button on a camera and getting lucky.

I suspect these tools will be much the same. The learning curve will be steep to get the output that you want. It may be easy to generate beautiful videos. Creating something that I meaningful is another matter.

  3. AI is absolutely going to take jobs from artists. I've seen a lot of cope over the last few years about how AI will never be as good as a human artist. First of all, I'm not entirely convinced that is true. It's not there yet but it's only going to get better over time. But more importantly, in the majority of cases it doesn't have to be as good as a human, it just has to be good enough. Good enough plus much cheaper and faster than a human is going to appeal to most people who would be looking to hire an artist. There will likely always be some demand for real artists, but human behaviour shows over and over price is more important than quality for most people in most situations.

  4. People who say, "Not in our lifetimes" have no clue how rapidly technology advances. Only 37 years ago, the home computer was a 64MB RAM Tandy 1000 incapable of displaying graphics, and it costs a cool $2000 at a RadioShack. 40 years ago, Atari 2600 was the pinnacle of gaming. Today, we have full-color, 4K VR with Oculus Quest 3.

Given the leap AI video has made in just 12 months, I predict as early as 2 years from now AI will be capable of producing full length video with sound indistinguishable from the real thing. By year 5, it will be producing a full-length movie.

If AI video looks this good NOW, imagine what the world will be like in another 20 – 40 years.

  5. That is the end of the entertainment-industry. They will no longer invest in such things when everybody can simply tell an AI what they want to see. There will be a fatigue by the people from all these AI-images.

  6. nice video, as always! fyi – I missed the fact that google is already addressing generating content through Pixel Markers in the Video that can be picked up by AI, but are not visible. The same works for Video Gen. Great feature to counter misinformation!

  7. You should deeply question anything that the majority of the internet is telling you to dislike.
In my experience, it turns out to be the opposite of their current narrative.
