What killed Guitar Hero? I look at the rise and fall of the Guitar Hero game including:
* How GuitarFreaks and Dance Dance Revolution inspired Harmonix and Red Octane to create Guitar Hero
* The rise to mainstream success with Guitar Hero 2 and 3, and the fall of Guitar Hero World Tour and Guitar Hero 5 after expansions and sequels burned out the audience
* How Rock Band threatened Guitar Hero and how GH helped bands and songs like Dragonforce “Through The Fire And Flames”, The Fall Of Troy “F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.”, My Chemical Romance, and Aerosmith
* Guitar Hero Live, Clone Hero and Guitar Hero’s lasting impact and influence

20 thoughts on “WHAT KILLED GUITAR HERO? The rise and a fall…

  1. I wasn’t the best at Guitar Hero I’ve seen, but being able to make it to the end of Through Fire and Flames on hard is still one of my proudest gaming achievements. Never did get to the end on expert though.

  2. I actually rather like the "music videos" in Guitar Freaks. They can get pretty wild at times. Also that game exposed me to Helloween and Focus.

On the other hand, Guitar Hero 1 and 2 had far superior tracklists…

  3. No matter which version of World Tour everyone played, we can all agree that the animations were just lazy. Look at the drummers in all the versions, they are all doing the same animation for ALL OF THE SONGS.

  4. Guitar Hero 3 & Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock were probably my two favorite games back then and WOR was mainly to transform into a sick crazy monster and stuff back then I had just get a kick out of that at the time when playing the game so much it's all what matter to me.

  5. I still have a rockband setup and one of the games. Play it with my kids (who are aspiring musicians in their own right). As a drummer, I don't like playing rockband drums, but my kids have found it valuable as a learning tool. It is such a fun game and I feel like it would have success if released in a new version.

    Such a great gaming experience.

  6. I was the only guitar player I knew that actually enjoyed Guitar Hero/Rock Band and played them regularly. Every other guitar player I knew had a very elitist attitude towards Guitar Hero, like "That shit is fucking stupid! People should just learn to play REAL guitar!" And I would tell them: "It's just a game. It's for fun. And it IS fun. Just try it out." They were stubborn and resistant, but I got a few of them to play the game. And guess what? As much as it pained them to do so, they admitted that it was actually fun and they had a good time. I miss Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

  7. I think the true successor to Guitar Hero / Rock Band is the Rocksmith franchise. I am an actual guitarist / Bassist. i thought the concept of Guitar Hero was cool, but it didnt show how to play real instruments. During the pandemic i decided to pick up playing bass as i was stuck indoors alot. i had found out about Rocksmith 2014, and that it existed for the PS4. so i bought it. i have been playing it almost every night since. its like battle of the bands every night at my house with my dogs lol. (a captive audience lol) Now i am signing up to take bass lessons, along with playing rocksmith every night. i am now hopeing the new Rocksmith+ will be released on PS4 PS5 as well. it does look like there is a subscription though. but if it helps to fund the game, i would pay for it. Rocksmith is my #1 favorite game – even more than Final Fantasy as it makes me feel like a guitar playing bad ass lol.

  8. I love guitar hero/rock band. My husband and I have at least a dozen games 😂 I grew up with family that listened to rock around me. So the game was cool to me because I opened up the game and I immediately knew at least a few songs. I had friends who didn’t really have the money to buy a lot of cds and just listened to what their parents liked so they didn’t really hear this stuff until the game. I know for a fact it opened up a world of music to kids in a middle of nowhere small town.
