38 thoughts on “DefunctTV: The History of the Original Ghost Busters

  1. As a kid I saw the movies and I still played the original Ghostbusters, with Tracy the gorilla and I even had a cozy coupe with a face drawn on it like the talking car from the real real ghostbusters, not the guys who came and stole the name, I.e the proton pack guys.

  2. The Filmation Ghost Busters is still "the real one" to me. I even sang along with the opening credits watching this video.
I was so disappointed finding out the blockbuster movie wasn't going to be about Spencer, Tracy and Kong!

  3. I showed this to my parents (my dad a fan of cartoons, my mom actually went to see Ghostbusters in 1984 when it was first released), they have no recollection of this series but they do remember the issue with the cartoons (neither of which appeases my mother.)

  4. Funnily enough, I grew up on both cartoons (on DVD of course, too young for the original airing) and I always wondered where the cartoon spin off of the original fit into the Ghostbusters Cinematic Universe (the GCU, if you will).

  5. This franchise has single-handedly been tainted in my eyes because of Vinesauce Joel’s silly-ass Super Ghostbusters album, I can’t see any ghostbusters stuff without thinking about that album…

  6. Me, holding a phone in my left hand and another in my right, dialing a different set of Ghostbusters on each – "I'm calling them both! You've rattled your last chain, you son of a ghoul!"

  7. Found an interview from one of the Filmation people, they claimed that they got at least one angry phone call about the cartoon from someone who thought it was based on the movie because the guy thought they turned Winston into an ape for it

  8. The episode with the ghosts of the Abominable Snowman and scientist had a running gag involving the word "dense"
Scientist: "Sometimes you are so dense"
    Snowman : "huh?"
    Scientist: "dense"
    Snowman: "whuh?"
    Scientist: "DENSE, DENSE!!!"
Snowman: "OOOH!!" *breaks into soft shoe dance

  9. Shame Bill was such an ass though and kept sequels from happening till actors had died after the second one. The man is a complete jerk on set to work with as well. So instead we got the 2016 trash. Bleh

And Hollywood accounting is utter bullshit.

  10. Very different concepts, One was a supernatural comedy-adventure featuring familiar TV comedians playing professional ghostbusters who work out of a brick building and then get into their vintage car to zap ghosts with their high tech ray guns.

And the other was the same thing.

  11. So technically Dan Akyroyd and Harold Ramis didn't Created Ghostbusters after All 😱, They just Remake it based on The Same name from The 60s or 70s a decade Earlier 🤔

  12. So the same accounting tactics that would hit Winston Groom in the mid 90s were used against the "Ghost Busters" sitcom in the 80s…the more things change, I guess.

  13. I never understood why there was another Ghostbusters cartoon with a gorilla until now. I always wondered why there were two totally different cartoons and characters but the shows had the same name. Thank you for this video! 🙂

  14. I still remember, as a kid, being excited to see the new Ghostbusters cartoon, and waking up on a Saturday morning to scan the TV listings in the newspaper. I came across the Ghost Busters, so I woke up early to watch… the cartoon version of this, to my utter confusion and disappointment.

  15. If not a gorilla, then you fall back on midgets, always with the midgets. As a 70s kid, I thought if you were part of a group that did ANYTHING, you had to have a Midget, even better if he could drive a tricked out Van!
I wrote "Snort n Puff", a pilot episode about 2 pre-schoolers that sold drugs, but it failed….didn't have a midget……
    or a Van….

  16. They should do a tie in comic combining the 2 shows into the same universe and just say the sitcom ghostbusters were amateurs that just destroyed the ghosts while the real ghost busters trapped them and attemped to understand them better

  17. It's great to see Filmation's GhostBusters getting some love! The only other person I know who's made a video about it– which is how I discovered its existence, is an old Familiar Faces Halloween video made by CR back in 2009/2010 (I don't remember) back in the days of TGWTG.
