You’re lucky you weren’t in the US when the police came to arrest you for the stolen van. They wouldn’t have even given you the chance to show them a video to prove it wasn’t you. They’d have said some cocky line like “save it for the judge” and took you to jail. And they probably do it on a Friday, on a holiday weekend, so you’d have to sit in jail all weekend until you could get bail on Tuesday.
Airpods and trackers are really not much money to protect a car. Most of the monthly cost trackers are less than the cost of netflix. Its a no brainer to get something on your vehicles for peace of mind.

Don't forget if there aren't ppl close to the device with iphones you can't track it. So the smart bet is to use Samsung Smartag+ and Airtag like I do. I don't live in a big city and it's quite rural here so only having an Airtag is dumb. It'll def work better in a super large city but I'd still get the Samsung + tag also.
I even have them hidden in my ebike and motorcycle.
