In this episode, Kevin discusses the history of Disneyland’s Adventure Thru Inner Space, a ride that shrank guests to the size of an atom and was sponsored by an infamous company.

man, once kevin revealed that monsanto was responsible for agent orange and the poisoning of vietnam, it was an absolute gut punch. monsanto is the ultimate example of a milkshake duck. it was known and presented as something to trust and use in your home with things such as clothing and laundry detergent, but it ended up ruining thousands and thousands, if not millions, of lives with operation ranch hand and agent orange.
also 'miracle from molecules' playing over the poisoning was just chilling. i felt as if the song took on a whole new context with monsanto's darker history.
Have I gone mad or is that the Sekilos epitaph at the end there?
Adventure Thru Inner Space actually sounds like a fun ride.
Playing “Miracles from Molecules" over the video footage from the Vietnam War gave a haunting, dystopian, and demonic feel.
The drum beats in the song sounded like boots marching off to war.
Amazing video! Super cool and I learned so much! I had no idea Monsanto manufactured agent orange. I knew they were evil because of their production of pesticides, trying to trademark seeds, and intimidation of farmers but I had no idea they created agent orange too.
So, WB and Amblin Entertainment ripped off the ride theme for Inner Space, the 1987 movie staring Dennis Quade, Martin Short, and Meg Ryan. Steven Spielberg was an executive producer. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it. I'm not going give any spoilers, but there are definitely influences from the ride.
" to spread democracy" a yes, we love some hypocritical U.S
If it hasn't already been shouted out in the comments below, the 1988 R.E.M. song "Orange Crush" is a pretty good companion piece to this documentary.
The way the ending perfectly made me want to watch one of your older videos. Really good shit
on the ride with my girlfriend
Her: giving hints to me
Me, a Chem nerd: “woah look we’re the size of an H2O molecule! They even got the VSEPR structure right!”
I wish Disney would make more original rides like this and not just IP’S
Is this the last ever Defunctland series episode? I keep waiting for series 4 but it's been 18 months…starting to look unlikely.
They can revive this concept using the Quantum Realm from Ant-man.
21:08 was it normal to address children like that or was the announcer being weird?
I remember riding this and have fond memories. The "shrinking" set piece in the lineup is a particularly strong memory. I don't remember much else.
War ruins everything, even theme park rides.
I knew about agent orange, I had no idea it was Monsanto. What a disgusting company leader to do that. Amazing video man.
I was on this ride in 1968 with my folks and brother. I remember the eye freaked me out at the end. I was 14 and now all that's left from my family that experienced it.
I enjoyed the America the Beautiful exhibit! It was a wonderful experience with the 360 degree view and, as a young child found it exciting to attempt to take it all in while my dad complained it hurt his neck to keep his head swiveling.
This season has been about Epcot all along. To understand Epcot, we had to start with the White City and the farmer's son. MIND BLOWN.
Unmentioned is that the obituary of Carl Orff, composer of the "Carmina Burana," is visible below the obit for the Monsanto head. "No plow stops for the man who dies."
I worked at the Tomorrowland Terrance. At the end of the 18 years the ride became known as the make out ride. People thought it was a private dark ride but there cameras everywhere watching them. Also some kid decided to throw a firecracker in the ride and the ride caught fire making the snowflakes melt for real. The ride was never repaired I remember riding the ride after work and seeing the melted snowflakes. When it finally closed down to make way for Star Tours I was sad that one of my favorite rides were gone. Star Tours was good but it really did not go anywhere. All the moving was in one spot and the film got boring after a awhile. When the ride was changed to a variety of locations they changed it to 3D, something I had great difficulty seeing, it look blurry to my eyes. I found out that not everyone can see the 3D effects. Meaning I could not enjoy the ride. I wish they would bring inner space back when they remake Tomorrowland.😢😢
I loved watching this video. It really went into detail just how much thought and creativity goes into Disney rides and makes me long to go back.
Man, this makes me desperately want to go back to Disney World/Land. I love that place so much.
