    Saruman was to be Sauron's right hand man, if Saruman did not desire the Ring for himself.
    Denethor was being manipulated by Sauron showing him the might of Mordor. Denethor had some faith in men, but it was broken with the "deaths" of his sons.
    Pippin wasn't driven mad from the Palantir, like at all. It was painful, yes, but that is Sauron digging for information from Pippin. Sauron has no idea who Pippin is and can't manipulate him that quickly. Luckily for Sauron, he's not able to resist being pried open. Even better for the Fellowship, Pippin is a fool and barely knows anything.
    Lastly, Aragorn uses the Palantir previously held by Denethor (I think, there 's only like 7 or 8 of these things) to taunt Sauron. Sauron claps back hard, showing Aragorn a vision of a dead Arwen and his failures. The vision is so upsetting to Aragorn that he visibly ages in that moment and has to drop it.
