4. I hear the story of a mother fleeing to a sanctuary state from an abusive father with her kids far too often. States like California are problematic for enabling this and making it nearly impossible for fathers to retrieve their children, even if they have equal custody rights, unless they can afford exorbitant legal fees. In real cases of domestic abuse, there would be visible signs of injury, and police intervention would separate the father from the mother and child immediately in every state. Family courts are already biased against fathers with broadened definitions of abuse, decisions based on a balance of probabilities, and no criminal punishment for lying under oath in family court about rape or abuse, so the fact that the mother felt like she had to flee to another state to gain full control of her child is utterly deranged. It was not shocking at all to then hear that this mother had schizophrenia, and helps explain that the mother's delusions likely led to her feeling the need to flee states. I'm not saying that a good mother shouldn't prioritize her and her child's safety, but I am saying that after assurance of safety, the courts should swiftly be involved in solving the legitimacy of the abuse and determining custody. Mothers shouldn't be allowed to flee to California with their children and essentially lock fathers behind a several hundred thousand dollar court case that takes years to settle before gaining access to their kids. I'd also like to say that kids are impressionable and a resentful parent can easily alienate their child from the other parent, which is what I think typically happens in these cases, hence why these children don't comprehend the wrongdoings of their parent that stole them from their other parent.

10. I wish someone had told me when I was 21 that my parents weren't allowed to possess me. Took years of being completely out of touch with my actual self, only doing things out of fear of them – before I was forced to slow down enough to realize that I was constantly in fight or flight. All day every day. Manipulative/narcissistic parents will never teach their children to look out for the red flags of manipulators and narcissists. So without outside instruction or therapy or some kind of intervention, you don't see these red flags in your parents, nor in friends and romantic partners who are using you and seeing you as a possession/resource as well. I hope the 21 year old gets free from her abusive Dad ASAP. She has the power to do it now, but he literally programmed her throughout development to fear his wrath above all else. It's so deeply ingrained in her nervous system. She will have to figure out a way to slowly arrange things, where she can move out while he's out of town – or figure out a way to just suddenly leave over night with only the things she cannot afford to replace, or something. And then just let him know. If he chooses to be hateful to his own daughter, well he will have to live with such a horrible and ugly decision. Your family of origin isn't always your forever family. Many people make chosen families to support each other/celebrate holidays, etc. Parents having legal authority over you from the time you are born, doesn't mean they were ever right about anything they told you or anything they did. Certainly doesn't mean anyone taught them how to be a decent human or parent. And just because they said they 'loved' you, it doesn't mean they actually did. If you are afraid of someone, and are afraid to tell them super normal things that everyone else does, that person doesn't love you. For some people "I love you" means "I own you. I need to feel powerful over other humans. I'd be furious if you tried to take my possession away."
