5. My classmate Donald Johnson had came in from the Army on leave and I went to his Mother’s house to visit him . Old Donald still had that shy smile . I remember he ordered this huge cassette player in high school to go in his car as we were jamming Shaft. But this time he had a complete audiophile Sony I believe it was and I asked him what group was that . He said the Blackbyrds. From then on I was a fan . While attending Langston University the Fall of 1973 , I listened to Where are we going by Donald Byrd. Seems like the music soared through the open air and surrounded you with good vibrations . Then in 1974 my neighborhood friend growing up Gary Johnson on our way to Dallas in his yellow Volkswagen. I remember Street Life as we cruised down the highway just so mellow . That’s what this music does causes you to relax and forget about your problems . Rest in peace Donald Byrd right up there with Dizzy and Miles and all the great trumpet players .. 34. The Blackbyrds and Pleasure were basically jazz bands that played R&B. The Blackbyrds were found by Donald Byrd in College and Pleasure was found by Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders. Both were very dynamic bands that would fluctuate between different styles. Definitely two of my favorites
