36 thoughts on “How To Find The Best Strain: Expert Phenohunting Tips! – FTS Podcast Ep.241

  1. I have found 1 out of a million for the strain lambs bread. My phenotype i have smells like bubblegum, which is extremely rare amongst this strain. I'm currently making bx1s as we speak. And I do have a mother plant and clone. Once I get to f5s I will be crossing it with ten cos clone blue zushi. To make lambs breath x blue zushi regs to pheno hunt as I want a creamy bubblegum flavor. I want to call that Blue Breath Of Lazush.

  2. I just want to say thank you guys for all content! I'm newish to growing only 2 years now. Back in the day we use to grow in the woods but that stuff don't count. Anyway yall make a very complicated subject much easier to actually understand. I'm old so I like the super skunky stuff that gets me stuck. Any suggestions on a good strain to start hunting? I run hydro also if that matters.

  3. I'm just happy to seeds start.
Ing and then vegetation and then flowering and then drying and caring. I know what it's finished. I'm happy doesn't matter because from day one today, 160 again.
And then another week or two in my cannatrol hooray it's over and happy 🪴🦍⚡️🦍⚡️☕️🏡🥷 anything that makes it to the end is good period

  4. If you have unstable genetics you can pheno hunt with 2 seeds. This discussion is missing this key question. How stable are the genetics and how much genetic diversity do they have. If I buy a F9 like BBM I don't expect a lot of different phenotypes.

  5. Dang, great show! This was real, growers passionately talking about the struggles that are happening in their gardens right now, as they stretch their selves, learning as they teach. Thanks guys.

  6. I think with all things in life the best practice is to always keep gratitude. Above All Else, always be grateful. We could not have a house to grow a tent and we cannot have a tent we could not be able to afford new beans or the lights we need we could not have the opportunity to grow ourselves 5 or 10 plants. These are all realities in life and if they aren't our realities then we should be grateful

  7. I have smoked hundreds maybe thousands of different strains. There's never been a single strained bull Blount whatever anything that was like "eeewwww I hate that stain". I've definitely been burnt or ripped off and give some that had whatever added into it or was something completely different back in the day but aside from that, I love this plant. Full 🛑

  8. My finances only allow for me to buy 3-5 seeds at a time. I am perfectly happy with whatever the good Lord gives me. I got a tent in a basement in a house that is already expensive. I'm doing this and learning this skill/hobby to save me money. I'm sure there will be things I love more than others but I know there won't be anything I hate so that's awesome

  9. Hey stash guys I'm only 4 minutes into the video and I would imagine you probably get into this but just in case you don't and so I don't lose the question what are those characteristics that all of you guys agree upon that you love in this plant that we all love so much?

  10. The four purple Cookie Kush plants I just grew are so radically different well two of them are alike and are big and a light green color and then the other two are alike and they're smaller and a dark green color. I can't wait to see how they taste smoke and feel but that's like a month and a half away yet

  11. 9:56
It all comes down to perspective. I’m currently in the camp of just doing the best I can to open a line of communication with the plant. Even when it’s not what I thought I wanted, it’s still very pleasant to smoke. It lifts me up knowing that I’m integrating my experience with the outcome and having a plan for the next grow. I’ve come to choosing beans from Humboldt Seed Company. They have all the freedom to pheno hunt on multiple farms. I just harvested a Jelly Donutz that is too early to smoke, but smells great. The real big hitter seems to be their Banana OG. It’s getting really nice purple mottling on the leaves and is just stacked in the best way. Of course I weighed down the atypical with copper wire and the cola that fought the hardest is standing tall and proud. The reason I’ve chosen HSC, is because we’ve grown out so many different breeders and their methods of genetic isolation is on par with surgical precision. What I’m really looking forward to growing is their Mint Jelly and their Squirt. They’re the real deal.

  12. List of importance
    Females
    1. End smoke. (taste & potency)
    2. Vigor.
    3. Yield.

Trichome production is a big indicator of potency. Trichome head size vs density. Stalk size.

    Males
    1. Vigor.
    2. Structure.
    3. Smell.

Cannabinoid dilution theory. Bring me on to talk about NPK ratios too.

  13. As a professional craft breeder …I pop a hundred or more seeds per hunt …I end up keeping like 3 or less before up potting. My first selection is allways based on initial vigor. From there I look for all the other traits in flower and after harvest I make sure to cut clones and back up the phenos before the first flip …after flowering once I know if I want to cross it or not …

  14. My state has a super-restrictive plant count limit (6 total, only 3 in flower), which makes a lot of what you are talking about really difficult. It's not just having a small number to "hunt" from, it's also the difficulty of maintaining clones while you do it…since each of them counts toward your limit as well. It's not impossible, but you have to be really careful to manage it all.

One way to do it is: maintain 2 mothers, 1 clone of each in veg. and one clone of each in flower. After you figure out which of those two mothers is the keeper, you can toss the other one and introduce a new plant. Rinse and repeat.

It's very slow going, so its best to do this only after an extensive "geno-hunt" to find the strain/cultivar/family that you want to explore. the FTS boys did that by smoking a lot of different options, others will need to grow them out in order to test them. I'm actually doing that right now: should take me a couple of years to really nail down the right genotype…then I can start the next stage.

Not too worried how long it takes. It's a labor of love, to be sure.

  15. I got the small micro hunter profile. I look for potency, terps, and short squatty plants that fit in a 5ft tall 2×4 tent. Using microbes really helped me see more expression to see what I like. I've been growing 2 different genetics each run and just taking notes in a journal to see what I want to return to. Thank you fellas for the insight, entertainment, and hang 🤜🌱🤛
