Ending global poverty has been a topic of great importance for a lot of human history, but what if we’ve been thinking about it wrong this whole time? What if a basic Nokia phone could help end poverty. In this episode we take a look.

24:54 thanks for spotlighting direct cash giving — donations will go straight to Kenyan families in need as cash, no strings attached
Feel free to ask us questions in reply to this comment
Directly donatinthe money to those who need it was a genius idea. The alternative would be to give it to the governments and we all saw how that worked
Great idea. Youll get more donations if you allow people to send what they can. You may even get people that send monthly subscriptions.
1 million people will send $5 a month. Easily.
It will be hard to find 1000 people to send $850 1 time.
The "give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, while teach a man to fish and he will eat for life" is just stupid and reductive.
It's easy to condescend when you aren't starving and in poverty but it's a different thing for the people who are.
Let people who actually need the money to figure out what they need to do.. it's still infinitely better than the money disappearing into the bureaucracy.
AMAZING!!!!!!
This is because the people who got the cash are grateful people with real intentions of upward mobility for not just themselves but their families. We need to fund this more. That communual working together to get out of poverty is so inspiring
Hate to be that guy but, it's Space Impact.
ANY 5TH GRADER FROM AN INDUSTRIALIZED NATION CAN HACK THIS 30YR OLD 1990'S TECH.
I always use Mpesa whenever I go to Tanzania, it's pretty cool paying for services in Mpesa
poverty is only a side effect of the system by default
It's crazy that all countries had to figure out their ways to not starve and Africa is just leeching from world without making any progress, despite having very good weather for all crops, sun for energy and resources. This whole video looks like a scam as Dagogo provides affiliate link so he is making a profit on your donations.
This is happening only when technology ends up in the hands of good and honest entrepreneurs, not like here in the West, where all services have become a means of stealing from people with hidden fees and subscriptions. Congratulations, Kenya!!!
bill gates foundation crying in corner
Why this works for the most poor, it hands them control which is giving them respect. Providing for them only teaches them to wait in line
3:19 AMOG US
The USA is on the list of countries? I know that there's increasing poverty in the richest country on the planet but isn't that a bit strong?
This is amazing
I used to have a nokia 8210 in high school. I love that phone because it is small and I think that is the reason why I use an iPhone mini. Small phones were the higher end back then.
In Bangladesh it's called bkash. Probably 15 years ago.
This is very eye opening and insightful. Thank you Dagogo for covering this. Thank you GiveDirectly for challenging the status quo. Most NGOs waste donor funds with alot of operational costs and dumb reports, but zero impact on the ground. Give the people some funds, they'll solve their own problems. Awesome stuff!
I'm from Ethiopia, a neighbor to our brothers in Kenya, and I didn’t even know about this. Thanks for sharing! The intro was real and honest. It's hard to escape poverty, but we always keep fighting, never giving up. Thank you, and shout out to Safari and Nokia
I started watching Cold Fusion since the episode, How money is created (wealth) I have never thought I will watch some documentary about Kenya, mpesa ni kitu mzuri
When i complained about ngos paying brines to warlords just so they can go give food in exchange for some photos, received a lot of mean comments.
Those bribes are used to perpetuate the suffering of the locals, with direct money you can cut the middleman and red tape.
When i heard about the idea i got worried about fraud, but im happy thats lower than traditional methods.
4:00 and 21:45 say it all
Love this channel. I’ve never heard of this organization before but donated a small amount of money after watching this video. Keep up the good work!
