41. Former customer service agent for VOYA retirement readiness center during the early days of the pandemic 2019-2020. The expectations to perform were so high and the rules/policies so restrictive and the customers so rotten to me that, compiled with the uncertainty of the times, I became suicidal and developed a crippling social anxiety. It’s taken me a while to come back, but now I work for The Home Depot as a sales associate. I don’t make as much money but my life is more important to me and now I feel much better about providing customer service, especially since I can speak to people face to face in a lower stakes environment. If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts related to work stress, I urge you; take time off. Quit your job if you have to. No amount of money or material wealth is worth more than your life. Money will come and go, but tomorrow is never a guarantee.
