The 1907 Race of the Century car race has the racers more often or not just driving off road in the US.
That was really neat to hear about why Eisenhower was so intrigued with the autobahn but I gotta say Patton was famous for his tank exploits prior to this during ww1 and later gained notoriety for his impressive speed in pushing back Germany but his tank work was ww1

So the 1919 cannon ball record was 80 days. Now it would be more of a struggle to complete it in 80 days than beating the record

There's a book out there called American Road by Pete Davies- it tells the whole story of this expedition and is a pretty good read.
