40 thoughts on “The Hidden Forces Manipulating Car Prices

  1. If I was going to buy a new car I would have advertised on social media pages and asked if anyone else wanted to buy a new car and I’d get 20-30 people together and approach the manufacturer and say we would like to buy 30 cars and just let a dealership go without

  2. Love Donut Media content but I miss "Up to Speed" ….anyway Nolan says check out this video for cheap, cool, good used car…where is it?

  3. Shady as these car prices are anything purchased from a truck to a car to a hair brush is worth what people are willing to pay for it. Is a 2021 ford ranger worth 70 thousand or whatever they’re charging for it right now? I don’t believe it is maybe others might agree with me but somebody out there will pay it. So it stands to reason we can be assured that there’s no motivation to drop these prices cause people are paying it.

  4. I just think car companies need to cut out the middle man and own their own dealerships. Why is that system even in place? Why would a car company want to use a middle man that just steals profits? A dealership is just a place to check out the new cars and buy one, shouldn't be too hard for car companies to set that up for their own products 🤷 buying directly from car companies is the solution

  5. This is especially true in Washington. A company called Kendall auto has been buying out all the local name brand dealers in Washington as well as rairdon auto group, niether is a good company to work for and both have bought up so many dealers that they make up the majority and therefore get the most new cars and they also make enough that they give most people who trade in just enough more than they would get via private party then they’d shoot prices through the roof, I worked at a Subaru dealer for 7 years and then they got bought out by Kendall and it became a very different place, currently it’s so bad that a 2018 outback with 53k on it came in and sold for 7k more than a brand new 2023 outback of similar spec.
A few months before that we got in a white 2015 wrx with less than tasteful mods and 130k on it and it sold for 34k sticker price vs a 2022 selling for like 3k more

  6. I bought a Kona N at invoice price back in June. Glad my local dealership didn’t have a mark up on MSRP. So there are still some good dealerships.

  7. Also it's been almost 3 years and they still have a stranglehold on these artificial shortages. Some oem manufacturers willingly are limiting production because it saves them money and they can increase msrp on a short supply and they turn the cheek on the price gouging of 10k+ on an addendum sticker. Basically only if every oem acted like Ford and pulled allocations from dealers pulling shady shenanigans I think would make real headway. I've worked the business and many of my colleagues wanted to be able to charge over sticker from the start bc after an allocation was sold customer b c d etc would come in all saying they would willingly overpay. This is where consumers can be idiots and only have themselves to blame. 1 or 2 year old used cars often go for more than sticker and people still pay it. If you have to buy I'd reccomend looking for a 3-5 year old one with either undesirable options (there's a huge aftermarket of cheap goods) or a scratch and dent special especially if you're looking commercially anyways.

  8. I feel like I got pretty lucky with my purchase. The MSRP on a 2022 WRX is $29.6k, and I paid $31k in May of 2022. Not bad of a mark up at all compared to most.

  9. Love donut so I finally bought a hat and sadly a cheap product and genuinely wouldn’t recommend. The part hat hits your forehead was folded down in shipping forever bending it and making it look strange. I got a sticker with the hay excited to put on my pc setup as I peeled it off the backing it broke in half. Very cheap products. They have changed since the buy out. Not denying the products have probably always been cheap. Just quite disappointed as I was very excited to have a donut hat for myself… I will hang the hat in my room but will never wear it

  10. 3:50 was literally working for GM at this exact lot outside of St. Louis. Was hotter than balls. The first phase they would drive them on to the lots and then we would actually take the ECU and TCU out of them. (the vans were a pain in the ass) then send them back to the factory so they could continue driving them on to the lots. Second phase was when they finally got more chips. We would reinstall them, then we would use a special OBD computer supplied by GM to reflash them and make sure they weren't throwing any codes. It was about 60,000 vehicles in total. This year I worked for GM in Dallas Texas on their large SUV platforms. Escalades, Denali Yukon's, Suburbans… We were doing a lot more than just ECUs. They needed basically everything, Z71 stickers, stereo amps, OnStar antennas, touch screens, infotainment computers, the knobs for ac, the auto seat adjustment chips, window switches, proper color matched steering wheels. It was insane and is still ongoing.

  11. I worked for a contract company who did chip work for GM among other things. Ludicrous shortages are still ongoing. GM is paying millions for us to put chips in these vehicles en mass after the vehicles have been rebuilt.

  12. I stopped watching your channel because i only watched wheelhouse, even youtube stopped suggesting your content. Please Nolan keep doing this series

  13. A few months ago I purchased an automatic transmission 2000 Ford Mustang GT Convertible with 97k miles on it for $6k outright somewhere in the state of NC. This vehicle wasn't a repo however. It was a trade-in. I got it from a Toyota dealership. I think that is one reason why they gave me a pretty solid price on it

  14. I was able to get a new car at actually below msrp, by about 5k. This definetly isn't what most dealers are doing but I'd keep checking the market cuz with so much craziness you're bound to find a mispriced unit

  15. There are always many factors involved in events like this. But you are crazy, at least. COVID, manufacturers, and dealers are minor factors. There are only two major factors: Trillions printed out of thin air by central banks including the Fed and lockdowns. Corporate greed? What can corporate greed do in open cutthroat competition? It is taxation, regulations, and lockdowns that have kicked out lots of little guys. Do you now know why competition is decreasing and the market is mostly being captured by big chains of dealers? Read something outside the public-school textbooks. Economics, for example, is key to topics like this. Corporate greed or whatever greed is good. It is responsible for 98% of wealth that is generated around you and is being enjoyed by you. It is kept in control by competition, though. Government regulations, taxation and lockdowns are killing competition and benefitting the crony corporations that in turn are financing all major politicians.

  16. Ace combat is tight Nolan I'll be sure to splash you when you finally get on. Ironically PC was still the right choice despite the card shortage. Supply came back faster and you could still play ace combat on altered setting if you weren't up to date. You're a dyi guy, you can build a car, build a pc guy its way easier…. I'd help lol
