Tristan Buckmaster is at the centre of an unlikely controversy involving OpenAI and the pursuit of mathematics. Tristan claims that his chatlogs may have been read by OpenAI and the company swooped a $1million Navier-Stokes problem from him. In this episode we take a look.

  1. ColdFusion has been a huge inspiration for my curiosity about science, technology, and research. The way you explain complex topics so clearly and tell stories so naturally is truly inspiring. Your content motivated me to start my own explainer channel, WhyAtlasHQ, where I hope to make science and fascinating stories accessible to more people. ❤

I’m still at the beginning of this journey, and it would mean a lot to get a little support from a creator who inspired me to take this step. Hoping to reach people who enjoy the same kind of content and build something meaningful, just as ColdFusion has inspired so many of us. Keep inspiring! 🚀

  2. Your asking us to liable open ai and Altman in comments lol. Who pays the lawyers 😂😂😂. I will jus say that many people are saying Altman is a long standing liar and grifter. Maybe others would like to comment on hearing that as well😂😂😂.

  3. these modern Ai systems are a let down they simply cannot think outside the training data they ingested, they cannot think of anything new never before conceived or discover anything new in any branch of of science either, they simply output what ever was put into into them and they were trained on every book on every topic ever written and everything humans created was fed into them and thats there prison, no ai will ever solve the great mathematical problems people are still wrestling with today, these Ai's simply cannot think out the box in anyway, all they can do is use the massive amount of data put into them !!!

  4. Of course that these ai companies grab all the user logs. Even the free "anonymous" ai options!
Apply that formula to light and we have black holes, speed of light. If singularity means collapse is not good.

  5. I seen some video about some math dude crying about how he’ll never use AI same with these software dudes there so sensitive to the fact that there becoming obsolete and rather than adapt and innovate they choose ignorance , denial , and the lie of it being bliss .

  6. This video highlights the tension between AI advancements and academic integrity. Tristan Buckmaster's controversy warns how researchers fear losing intellectual property to AI companies. We need better transparency and legal frameworks to ensure AI acts as a partner in scientific discovery.

  7. The wonderful thing about this is that we don’t know.

The vast majority of people don’t have the math skills to check or even understand the navier stokes equations (me included). Did AI solve I don’t know that math is beyond my realm of knowledge. We will have to leave it to the mathematicians

  8. Who gives an F about who was working on the problem? The fact was: nobody was close to publishing the solution.
The coders took what was known and fed it to the AI. The AI cranked out a solution. Period.
Stop with the soap opera about whose feelings were hurt. Nobody cares.
In this world, the winner is the first to publish or patent.

  9. kinda stupid putting his eggs in the basket of a theft happy data training algorithm, let alone all of them. remember when walt hazed that meth maker in the hardware store when he was buying everything in one place? this is that

  10. The best defense is to keep all your important work private (i.e. OFF THE INTERNET) and be very VERY CAREFUL about whom you share it with, even in the physical world.. The system has already programmed us to work against one another by promising success, fame, wealth, and authority in return for our labour, only to have it all for themselves right when it's harvesting time.. Let's not "assist" the machines and LLMs in propagating this injustice..

The way I see it.. AI(or LLM) was, is, and will always be the tool with which humans will usher in dystopia under the pretense of utopia.. That's because it will never be its own driver.. Sentience is something AI will never come to possess.. It will always be the facade behind which The Powers That Be will obscure themselves, so that they can enslave the masses.. If anything, AI will replace the Democratic system of governance.. It is the politicians that have the most threat from AI..

  11. The AI company that secures researcher's data could become a real asset instead of a thief. So is OpenAI a thief? Yes, and their institutional lying just reinforces their culpability. Also I am mad that mathematicians have to clean up OpenAI's mess to establish a chain of logic to achieve any real benefits.

  12. Mathematics is also about having a creative mind. Mathematics requires creativity. If there is no need for a creative mind anymore, then what is the point? The same could apply to Physics, Chemistry, or any other subject.

AI could solve problems and make new discoveries in Chemistry, so there might not even be a need for laboratories anymore. Whether it is Biology or Chemistry, AI could do everything.

Eventually, there would be no need for research in any field because AI would be able to do it all.

If Mathematics loses its value because of AI, then no subject will have any value at all—not even chip design, graphic design, or any other field.

  13. "What happens to chat logs of AI users". Look into the MMM lawsuit that blew up a neighborhood. The MMM "expert" had all 300 pages of his AI chat log read into the record.

  14. Hmmm….at the end of the day….it got solved and it sounds like this will have a huge impact on humanity. If you put your private IP “out there,” what do you expect? Really? These are some very bright people, especially in mathematics, but not so bright when it comes to keeping their IP protected.
