That trucker could have a special Edition chocolate bar called “We die like Men!” or at least sign some Chocolate bars like that and his name. I would buy one to frame and tell the story.
There is a "2016 jk experience alaska " nitto usa video. Absolutely a MUST watch.
As the son and grandson of truckers…polite and courteous goes along way with truckers. I didn’t have a CB but a wave or a light flash does the trick too
1:11 what a fantastic quote from Ficarra, that's so memorable, i love it
Whoa this is the best story yet!
What fuel were you all using in the Porsche Turbo’s, or were you using octane boosters?
Im a simple man, I see a Ficarra story i click it
Haha We die like men!! Great story John!
City folks experiencing the real world
Prudday bay?? Come on John you were here in Alaska! Prudhoe.
The dream the dream the dreaaaaaammmmm!
This is exactly what I want to do. In Cayennes as well.
The ice road is actually awesome. Summer is the worst. I am a log truck driver in northern canada. Avg speed on the ice roads are 40mph
Amazing adventure! Could you do this road trip in a base 911, 992?
This was an awesome trip. Couldn’t have done it without Ficarra.
I enjoyed your modern day adventure tale and it was nice to see the road life up there. It doesn't sound like much has changed with the truckers heading to the Arctic.
In 1969, early April I think, I was 18 years old and drove my Toyota Land Cruiser from the University of Alaska (in College, AK at the time, now a part of Fairbanks' footprint) to Livengood. Three of us had two jerry cans of extra fuel, and just enough hubris to get us on the edge of trouble but not quite (thankfully in retrospect). We drove past all of the "do not enter" and "private road" signs to get to the new ice road that 12 Caterpillar bulldozers had built over the winter, almost a year after the first discovery of oil on the north slope. Our goal was to drive to the Yukon River and across the six foot thick pack ice. We didn't have enough fuel to go further unsupported.
The ice road had one serious problem… the turns around hills/mountain slopes were all slanted in the wrong direction (downhill) as the road was built quickly and the bulldozers just followed the terrain. On the VERY FIRST turn before I had put my Toyota Landcruiser in 4wd, I did a 360º spin and studied the downhill slope of the avoided wreck I could have been. We put chains on all 4 wheels, put it in 4wd with locking hubs, and proceeded much slower after that.
We came upon a dozen truck/trailer rigs pulling heavy equipment going north. They would stop every hour or so to check on each other and make sure they were all in proper running order. Then saw us coming and pulled over as much as possible for us to pass. One driver, a portly man smoking a cigar, walked up and said "what are you boys doing up here in that littler pisser"… I should note with Southern California license plates. We explained our goal and they then brought up the rear and we headed to the Yukon River.
Some hours later, as we stopped on a promontory overlooking the river, they passed us again. We crossed the river, just enough to say we did it, took a photo of a sign that pointed to Stevens Village to the left, and North Slope to the right… hand made with a black marker on a piece of plywood.
It was a trip I'll never forget, thanks for the memory.
🙂
I want one of these cayennes
I know he’s a channel OG but I really don’t get the hype around John. He over embellishes things and always just makes odd comments in his stories..
You can build a Porsche or just buy a stock landcruiser 79 series. The stock Toyota will make it problem free
Its amazing how detached from polite society and self-sufficient people he is.
Good stuff
after seeing a guy do it in r8 this is easy 😀
2:09 Montana is a figment of your imagination. We dont exist….. Shhhhhh
is there video of this trip on the cayennes? cant seem to find it anywhere
