The AI data centre boom is starting to falter before it’s really began. 50% of AI data projects are being delayed or canceled. This is despite already causing damage to many communities. In this episode we explore.

31 thoughts on “Why Building AI Data Centres Isn’t Working Anymore

  1. The first to feel the AI bubble will be chip companies.
If chip demand remains high, it means there's still a lot of AI server development going on.
Hopefully Chinese chip companies will be able to compete with Korean and American chip companies when all this A.I. bubble happens.
technology monopoly is not good for technological development. (just like food/medicine when there is no more competition)

  2. Its been too long and the inventions haven't happened. The return didn't come in AI is an information organization and presentation tool tuned to human receptors, not a technological reprieve

  3. I'm far-left, fuck all things AI. The world(people) are becoming increasingly more stupid. This push to AI, will only exponentially increase this, people will stop using their brains. Then… We have more people like Trump in power.

  4. From the get go: Infrastructure.

How can you bring on GW of datacentre if you don't have ready access to power, water, etc?

Power being the main one as seen a lot of these projects are on a go slow purely because of that.

Example just for compliance to have a power station grid ready.
Ten years because thorough testing is required not something you can fast-track without MAJOR
    restructuring of the entire process.
But most of all it needs to be road-tested over time; simulations have limitations.

Things need to be put through their paces to see if they can get the duty cycle of running 24/7 for as long as is required.

Whether it can be throttled back if need be due to surplus elsewhere all these things we take for granted and never think twice about.
Trip events are a big issue, and such facilities try to avoid them like the plague.

But it's either that or noisey turbines and ICE's doing that work instead.
Or do we go the route of SMR's oh boy whole different can of worms but same problems, where safety is the main issue.

Things going wrong happen all the time ones ability to regain and maintain stability is the core issue.

  5. Why don't they build these data centers in cold areas.. cooling is expensive, so put the heat into use.. heat homes, whatever, in winter local municipality could be used as a heatsink/radiator.. nah, let's build in Texas..

  6. the companies are burning money and the CEOs are too stupid to realize that firing everyone and putting all your money into something that won't make your money back is not how you make a profit, the costs are going up to run these things and its actually cheaper to make personal data centers that are comprised of several mini super computers than to construct these massive things that don't help anyone.

  7. Yes more Data centers please. We need a data center every 10 ft apart from each other. Kick out all citizens from their homes, and apartments and build all data centers everywhere and make the taxpayers pay for it being built and pay what it costs to keep it running. We need all data centers everywhere and the only people to have a place to live are the rich people and government officials and employees. All other citizens homeless. Well put them in prison and make them work to pay the bills for the data centers to stay running.

  8. AI is dying because the energy need to feed it is very enormous. The best thing for us to do is to devise those links that link Quantum to those hard core processes. Also those to use photonics and advanced magnonics!

  9. Tech companies, notably elon musk, warned us about doomsday resulting from climate change. Now he is the tip of the spear with this push for data centers that use more electricity than entire metro areas! Im glad both republican and democrats are coming together to voice that we dont want these data centers

  10. Still no universal healthcare , it's all about enriching your billionaires and their hyper corrupt MAGA government.
The Chinese are about to throw a spanner in the works with ai at a tenth the price and …OPEN SOURCE!!!! WOW never saw this coming, and it will hurt when US investors are left holding the empty paper bag, as the billionaires rise to trillionaires. Americans are such greedy greedy billionaire worshipers, and so weak at resisting this.
Phone the French, they will show you it's done!

  11. G’day Dagogo. Fantastic video I think I’ve seen on this subject. I’ve been watching your videos for years and this one is absolutely broadcast quality. Well done, mate. And great to see the man behind the voice finally. Keep up the good work 👏👏👏👏

  12. Shouldn't be more resarch done in optimizing the energy hungry calculations (lots of multiplications going on here) of the neural networks with different kind of chips? How about optical. I stumbled upon the German company "Q.ANT" that does optical computers. I have no affiliations with them, and I do not know any other…yet. But the problem might be small money. This is not a big tech company. There were researchers in Texas that made semiconductors that also can store a certain amount of analog voltage in the bulk which they used to have the role for the "weights" in the neuron, which means analog weight multiplication. They made human face and movement pattern recocnition solely on the chip. That thing just uses 3 Watts! So the message ist clear: the most energy consuming bulk of AI can be moved to different architectures using different principles of physics. This does not mean Nvidia gets bankrupt. Those chips are NOT general purpose. But we can use general purpose for things they are better suited for. Hoisting data around, memory arrangements in SoCs, so the where-to put-which-data-and-how-to-read-it thing (you need to store the weights too, somehow). Still the domain of digital.
If a chip could have discrete levels of analog voltage you could even face decay, a big downside of analog solutions. But there is hellish amount of money now for AI, but not for research outside language models, it seems.
We would rather kill our planet and thus us instead of paying a developer his/her well-owned money…. and still fail mostly at that.
