  1. It feels like other companies have been trying to recapture the charm of Miis ever since Nintendo released them, but they always fail because nobody involved has a soul or knows what fun is.

  2. What was the "plus" about meta meetings anyway?

I want to listen clearly to what is being said, and at best see their face… That's all I need out of a virtual meeting for work. That's all.

  3. I can only speak for myself, but I can't help but feel like "tech" has gotten noticeably creepier since COVID, and it's caused me to drastically re-evaluate the level of "tech" I need or want in my daily life.

  4. Who would imagine people would want to live a good real life in the concrete world instead of spending money to live in a VR with graphics worse than early 2000 The Sims.

  5. i hate how often it’s pushed on oculus users. i can’t costumize my virtual home in my vr because the metaverse’s event is trying to be everything. i open up the games page, metaverse games, my metaverse character. i just want my virtual home back. they took away the option in my settings bro

  6. Maybe augmented reality might work. Not a complete visual replacement, but adding interesting things to what you see. But those meta raybans are _not on_.

Something that builds a hologram in your cornea might work, so you don't look like a complete dork.

All those years Dick Tracy told us about two-way wrist radio-TV as the cool communications medium… We have that now with Teams and other virtual meeting spaces and no one turns their cameras on. We don't need it. It does not fulfill a need — it works in zoom courtrooms because judges want to see peoples' faces.

And the avatar idea is just DOA. We thought it was going to be super cool until we did a test virtual meeting in a virtual conference room. Then you see how dumb the idea is. I don't want to view TV or a powerpoint displayed on a virtual window within a visual space. I just want to see it in full screen mode. You don't need VR for that.

  7. I used Second life over a a decade before Meta showed up, sky's the limit what kind of world setting you wanted to inhabit and you could do far more with your avatar, plus you got legs. This was already sterile and dated when it was new, it was marketed around work rather than fun, and the amount wasted on it could have revamped the entire nation's infrastructure.

  8. Billionaires burning their money to stroke their ego rather than trying to cure cancer? What else is new? Don't worry, big AI firms are burning money (and the environment) even faster than Metaverse did!

  9. we already had more successful metaverses before facebook came along… World of Warcraft, Roblox, FFXIV, VRChat, etc all did it long before them and better as well. It is effectively what Artifact tried to do when there were a lot of other digital card games already out and adapted to the medium while Valve tried to make Artifact like a irl tcg.

  10. I tried to log in two weeks ago after a log time and I had to do some kind of lengthy verification process that turned me off from it and it (Quest 2) went back into storage

  11. Metaverse is the Cybertruck of VR.

When I got an Oculus, the Horizon shit would be there when you put the glasses on. Since most of VR offerings are complete shit, I wasn't inspired to check it out. And, weirdly, they never even tried to promote it. No ads saying what all the wonderful things it could do were. Nothing. It just sat there like some kind of even more troublesome, glitchy Second Life.

What I'd like to see is them partner with True History's Great Courses for touring famous sites with world class instructors. I'd love to be in the Coliseum and hit a button and it changes to 2000 years ago and you can go back and forth. Explore.

I was using it for exercise, ala Beat Saber. But, to get it to use your own music selection was nightmarish. Also, it can connect to my Garmin watch and display heart rate inside the app. This is area they should promote. But, alas, they would have to make it actually work. It takes deep, deep, forum searching to even get the two devices to communicate. They should be partnering with Garmin and the others. Finally, the whole friggen thing is constantly not working for some reason. You spend a lot of time troubleshooting. It occurred to me it would be better for me to just get a pair of BT headphones, or crank up the speakers, and dance around to get the aerobic workout. Much happier. I hardly ever touch the Oculus after the initial buzz wore off. Google Maps is the only app that brings me back.

Like Musk, apparently Zuck has also surrounded himself with yes men who don't counter any of his "brilliant" ideas. And when they make this kind of Cybertruck/Metaverse decision, I'd be willing to bet there were many, many, people all around them who saw the folly of said brilliance, but were too fearful to go up against the dear leader's fragile ego.

  12. The facebook metaverse was DOA just because it fundamentally failed to match the appeal of existing VR meeting spaces – high customization. VR (and more broadly, virtual social spaces in general) is, for most people, a means of self-expression – you can look like whatever you want, you can build or explore fantastical environments, and you can meet other people doing the same thing. This goes back at least as far as SecondLife!

Ripping out the freedom to self-express and replacing it with a bland selection of premade assets in The Corporate Style was never going to work.

  13. It really feels like the end of an era. Even the characters who were rendered decently look childish, anodyne, and no person with even a lick of taste would have designed them this way. There is just no creativity left in that industry any more. The only ideas they have left are either stolen from Sci Fi Novels or pitched by an MBA in in a meeting.

The IPhone was a fully formed idea around a product people might like. The Metaverse is an ugly, janky solution in search of a problem.
