In this cannabis breeding episode of the Grow W33d at Home with Kyle Kushman podcast, we’re thrilled to welcome breeder and grower, Nathaniel Pennington, founder of Humboldt Seed Company. Nathaniel takes us back to his roots as a guerrilla grower in Humboldt, sharing how necessity drove him to start making his own seeds in the early days when cloning was unheard of and seed availability was limited. What began as a self-sufficiency effort eventually evolved into the renowned Humboldt Seed Company.

00:53: The Importance of Self Sufficiency in Breeding

02:33: Challenges of Breeding in Proximity to other Growers

04:12: Transition from Legacy Breeding to Commercial Production

Nathaniel dives deep into the challenges faced by legacy operators in the post-Proposition 64 era, the rise of corporate interests in the cannabis market, and the critical importance of preserving cannabis culture. He also gives us an inside look at the science behind phenotype hunting, the complexities of breeding c4nnabis, and how his company has remained a cornerstone in the community by staying true to its roots.

Kyle and Nathaniel also discuss the future of cannabis breeding, the resilience of the plant, and the ongoing battle to keep the cannabis community authentic and free from greed-driven commercialization. This episode is packed with invaluable insights for cannabis cultivators, breeders, and enthusiasts alike.
