Connecting the human brain to a computer has been the stuff of science fiction for decades but now it’s becoming a reality. Brain computer interfaces have been making large strides over the last couple of years. Neuralink has been joined by a host of other companies, some promising superior technology. In the episode, we explore the state of the art.

27 thoughts on “The Race to Control Our Brains Is Heating Up

  1. If the society pauses this technological advancement to help people for fear of what bad people will do with it, they deserve to loose the financial future of it. The core issue with uncontrolled bad people isn't a fault of the technology, protestors are focusing on the wrong group. It's cowardice that deflects from the powerful.

  2. "Ghost In The Shell" has basically said everything I had to say. We have zero defence for our rights and privacy against institutions and corporations at this moment in time. Why would we expect to have it when corporations come up with a new tech?

  3. The brain-computer interface race is getting really exciting. It’s great to see more companies like Precision Neuroscience and Synchron entering the field

  4. Most importantly, if something goes wrong, you could be permanently paralyzed, fall into a coma, or it may even result in death, as you are dealing with one of the most complex organic systems that you do not fully understand.

  5. Ive watched black mirror enough to know that it's horrible to have a private lucrative oriented company controlling and reading my brain. No thanks! I rather have a communist Chinese government chip in my brain than forced to pay a subscription to not have adds in my brain.

  6. I debated whether or not to comment because I know how people can be about some tech.
I'm 63, and I have suffered from alpha-numeric dyslexic and tremors since my childhood. I spent the better part of my life watching the BCI trials and wishing I could be a trial patient.
For those who do not have neurological problems, you have no voice in this type of treatment. Those of us who have to use "speach to text" to type correctly or "text to speach" for reading comprehension? Many of us would jump at the chance to try a procedure that "might" help.

  7. This has great potential to help those in need but like in the Ghost in the Shell anime/manga. Peoples memories will be hacked/manipulated. Giving them false thoughts etc also the mental viruses. Its crazy. The protections against that has to has to be implemented from day 1.

  8. I can already see the new 'stop killing brains' initiative in the future. I'm sure the CEO's are all looking at this like 'THIS is the ultimate live service!'

  9. As always in our world so far, the popular drive the market, and then all else needs to adjust unfortunately. A good example of that is the smartphones vs feature phones. You can't possibly have the same control over your life with a feature phone these days. Although that is a smaller risk question, regarding my brain is where I draw the line, as it is a lot more riskier. At the very end of the stick, if a product is a available, people will buy it and accept the risks (optional cause there are people out there that are clueless).
