The reason American enterprises and venture capital are willing to take higher risk compared to Europe is not because of their entrepreneurial spirit but because of the unlimited free money supply they have. As long as the US dollar has the monopoly of being the reserve and trade currency of the world, US businesses will keep on taking risks knowing Uncle Sam will print free money and bail them out if things go down. We have seen this again and again. This is the "exorbitant privilege" that the French finance minister Valery Giscard d'Estaing referred to. I would also be willing to take risks if I had a money printer at home and the whole world willingly accepted money printed by it.

3. I think one factor is the low birthrate among native Europeans. If a couple has only one child, they are typically not going to encourage that child to take a "risky" career by being an entrepreneur. Instead, they would want them to get some white collar office job at either a large company or the government.

15. When I think of European engineering I think of the nitty gritty nuts and bolts of it. I think they value function over form. The US is about the new new thing, so the tech can be hit or miss but it’s usually at the cutting edge or close to it, in theory.

    Consumer tech is pretty much that, what’s new and hip that will attract the most consumers the quickest.

17. Estonia is doing great to consumer tech. We punch way above our weight but at the end of the day we are a country of just 1.5mil people at most, and low taxes and easy taxes, gov subsidies and a well educated populace can't overcome that.

It seems to me that one of the first things Europe can do to help foster greater adoption and innovation and growth of homegrown tech companies would be if the individual member countries all agreed to give up their separate regulations in favor of a uniform EU regulation set over the whole of the continent. Companies should not have to, nor will they accept, the cumbersome burdens of meeting French regulations for France and then German regulations for Germany and then Italian regulations, and then Finnish regulations, etc. They will be more willing if they can meet one set of regulations that is applicable in each country. Ironically, this means Europe must move more and more into being really a single country, with regional character but uniform regulations. The future for Europeans may require all of Europe being one nationality.
