In this episode of Grow Weed at Home with Kyle Kushman, Kyle sits down with Danny Danko to discuss the complexities and challenges of cannabis legalization in California and New York. They delve into the high costs and quality issues facing California’s legal market, comparing it to the early days of legalization. The conversation highlights the complications caused by over-regulation and testing lab issues, suggesting that legislators are unnecessarily complicating the process.
00:02:06 – The Rollout of Legalization
00:04:11 – Slow Licensing of Legal Dispensaries
00:07:03 – Overregulation
Danko shares insights on New York’s cannabis scene, noting the proliferation of quasi-legal pot shops and the lower penalties leading to a resurgence in home grows and local dealers. They reflect on the evolving public acceptance and the shift towards normalization of cannabis use, even imagining a future where cannabis trucks operate like ice cream trucks.
Kyle and Danny also touch on their personal experiences with cannabis culture and the impact of commercial frameworks on small growers. They emphasize the importance of community and education in the cannabis industry, advocating for a return to simpler, more personal methods of cultivation and distribution.
The episode ends with practical tips for navigating legal dispensaries and a nostalgic look at the early days of cannabis activism, highlighting the progress made and the ongoing fight for better laws and acceptance.

I live in Chemung County and every single place that opened up here runs as a gift shop. You make a purchase in the shop and you receive a gift of cannabis. Coincidentally, the amount of cannabis product (flower, concentrate, edible) you receive seems to be based directly on how much you've spent on your purchase. These places get shut down and three more pop up. Danny is right, the NYS government and Office of Cannabis Management has fallen on it's face with this. I still shop black market because the prices in these shops are outrageously high for an inferior product. There is tons of really high quality cannabis making it's way here via other legal states and it's available for a lower price if you know the right person.
We have the same problem in New Jersey. I'm a legal operator and we have at least one illegal shop in our town. We have state and local inspections but nothing is done about the illegal operator. It is rough. One thing a lot of people don't know is legal businesses can't write business expenses off on federal taxes. That is about the most unnecessary and unfair business practice I have seen in a while. So we have to compete with a lop sided market and unfair tax practices.
Thanks for the chat.
Lots of nyc weed is garbage
High Times royalty , love you guys!
The cannabis plant is amazing to grow. Keep it simple. And you will be amazed. Definitely my favorite hobby

I need to meet up with Mr Danko. I agree with everything he's said. Very knowledgeable dude! I would love to teach some home grow classes here in upstate NY
You guys from high times are who got me started your office use to be in the building I use to do summer fill-in at my uncle Paully was your super of the building 419 lol but prob with todays younger groups liking dabs and rosin and hash holes is we had reggi and they have top notch everything so that’s the separation and diff in appreciation I try getting younger dudes interested in the plant that makes that nice rosin cuz that’s what changes them over but when they don’t see the flower and how beautiful they can be and the transformation from step to step in the growing process and you see them change I think guidelines on distribution should be lessened and testing and the testing facilities should have their guidelines tightened cuz there where the problems stem cuz everyone knows test results are bought but idk my opinion is once government steps in screw everything up they’re like the mob but with a legal license to extort businesses and people and manipulate things to work just for them not the people idk but keep it up guys.
Ice cream trucks are Getting busted in my neighborhood
Has anyone heard of the old cut called Midnight Oil that was from NY? Man, I wish I could get my hands on it. A guy used to grow it behind a fake wall in an apartment building high rise.
Guys the smoke that doesn't leave threw the front is slipping out the back door to the black market, low guaility hard to smoke. No flavor, awefull
Danny Danko. And Kyle.
Finally, after all this time got my hands on some strawberry cough. I appreciate it
Hi Kyle 👋
Kyle, this gentleman is the epitome of the cool American cannabis user who means no harm to anyone.
YouTube is on here censoring my comments are getting deleted
Back in the 70s it was terrible in Calif. In 1982 I got busted with an Oz. And a 1/4 gram of coke I was facing 3.5 years.
Kyle, have you ever been shot at??
As a NY'er we watched everyone else mess it up. Government bud and concentrate is garbage and ridiculously overpriced. They want $120 for a gram cart. I'm just glad I can legally grow outdoors, not that I or my neighbors ever cared. There's only 3 law officers in the entire county, they never cared either.
NY has failed
It honestly shocks me that two sharp men in this market my age are surprised that when the government gets involved its trash. Honestly…im floored
Hi. I currently live in NY, and used to be a licensed cannabis researcher in NC for hemp. I live in Upstate NY.. It is so screwed currently.. its crazy.. the wild west…they would not give me an application to be a processor or anything saying they are "not accepting applicants".. Literally just like the tax act back in the 20th century… anyways.. everyone sells it more or less illegally from all the head shops.. every now and then state cops come and bust them.. a few actual "licensed" dispensaries have opened up.. but naturally they are way overpriced.
Check out 14:10 "It is illegal to trade, barter, or “gift” cannabis to someone in exchange for something else. This includes “gifting” cannabis while selling something else (like a t-shirt or a sticker)." <less than 3 ounces is a violation 250$ fine . more than 3 class A misdemeanor
Baltimore, MD…in the house!
