In this episode we take a look at the company Lightyear. Their car, the Lightyear Zero was set to be the world’s first solar production car. It could drive for months without needing to be re-charged. It seemed like a dream come true but the journey was fraught with financial trouble. In this episode we take a look.

Some other stats: The motors are 97% efficient, the solar panels are 20% more efficient than average panels. The drag coefficient is less than 0.19

  1. What is wrong with equipping the parking spot with solar? way "cheaper" in engineering sense than carrying the panels on the car all the time. And stationary panels can be properly angled to ensure efficieny. And they keep your car from rain and snow when sun does not shine. And they keep producing to grid when car is not home. And they are easier to maintain. Charging in transit is just not that useful to justify the extra weight and complexity.

Maybe a small panel could be useful to run the AC when car is not plugged in, sure. But other than that, it would be hard to justify putting panels on the car rather than on the parking lot.

  2. Hey guys, Aptera might actually make it to customer hands. And in no universe is the Lightyear 2 an SUV. University degrees in general are useless. Information on pretty much everything is free on the Internet.

  3. if a car costs more than $50k – there's something wrong with the manufacturer. simplify, simplify and simplify some more. people don't need 90% of what modern cars offer! that is ridiculous how manufacturers complicate things and have zero market research, asking actual drivers what they need and want in a car. personally i'm rooting for aptera – that's is an amazing company that does things correctly from all view points, from engineering to client research. if they were on stock market they would be in my top list along with rocketlab. I hope Lightyear2 will get things right this time. sim-pli-fy is the answer.

  4. Lightyear went bancrupt, Sono went bancrupt, Aptera will follow. Everything else are just phantasies ans empty promises. Solar on cars just does not work. The real solar yield is pathetic.

  5. Oh Hell, yes! I was particularly attracted to the Sono Sion. That car would have been marvelous here in southern Arizona, USA, where we get around 300 days of clear, sunny weather annually. I've been driving a 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV for 8 years now and I'll never go back to fossil fuel transportation. At the very least, I will get my little EV trickle charged with a portable PV panel rig and LFP batteries in my upcoming retirement years. Not quite the same as being able to solar charge while moving, but the next best thing. Best wishes to all these forward looking companies for pushing the boundaries with their solar electric cars. One of them will break through someday. Very nice overview video on this topic.

  6. I’m am very interested in solar energy used in as many applications as possible. I have solar panels on my roof. My wife and I both drive hybrid cars. We’re currently waiting for a new Prius. My major concern about the Lightyear concept is collision safety. Is there were only Lightyear type vehicles on the road, that would be one thing, but the collision of a Lightyear and even a Prius would be a
    pretty ugly scene.
