Are novelty metal bands any good, or just a gimmick? I look at a few example like Ghost, Steel Panther, Gwar, Tenacious D, Okilly Dokilly, Dethklok, Sleep Token, Alestorm, Babymetal, Mac Sabbath, and more.

48 thoughts on “WHY NOVELTY METAL BANDS ARE AWFUL (or awesome???)

  1. I would like gwar if it weren't for the image and stage antics. I couldn't see them live without feeling ridiculous and I couldn't tell people that I listen to them without feeling goofy and corny af. The music is pretty solid, nothing amazing or anything, but the costumes are just too cringe.

  2. There are bandswho rely on good looking musicians, lot's of good looking singers with one hit that are then forgotten. But there are also bands that look theatricalaf and make great music, and the theatre just fits all they do musically. Visuals can make the whole experience make deeper than a dude in a checked shirt and jeans. Doens't mean I won't listen to the plain shirt guy if he makes great music, not everybody needs to be interested in fashion/theatre🤷‍♀

  3. I'd never even heard of Sleep Token but they don't sound too bad. A fair few of the others are bands that i listen to regularly lol.

  4. I didn't expect you to talk about Sleep Token. I'm not so much into the lore and hidden identities but this band has changed my music experience. Their songs are ethereal and so vulnerable but heavy when they need to be. There's only ever been one song that has actually made me cry and that song came from Sleep Token. I'm so glad this band exists.

  5. Ghost has turned into “Tobias Forge with hired guns” but the original band was actually a band. Simon Soderberg (Alpha) and Martin Persner (Omega) were awesome on guitar and a big part of their sound and stage image. Their music stands out to me even without the gimmicky but I’ve begun to lose interest with their latest record. It’s just not the same when one person becomes the whole band.

  6. You should watch the Tenacious D HBO show. Along with Mr. Show it's some of the best, weird 90s sketch comedy. And Jack and Kyle are excellent musicians.

  7. somehow i feel like this is missing the pretty fucking huge subgenre of troll metal that Finntroll (and maybe Korpiklaani?) started. i can't remember any other bands than Trollfest but i remember i used to listen to like 4-5 other troll metal bands 15-20 years ago.

The lyrical lore stuff of Finntroll is a fun take on anti-religion lyrics, using trolls instead of satanism/demons as the enemy of christianity. Trolls eating christians? sign me up lol

  8. You should look into an old Japanese band called Seikima II (pronounced 'say key mat soo'). Their entire gimmick revolved around them being actual demons from the hell world of Makai, here to usher in the end of the world at the turn of the century (They formed in 1982). While some of the members look like low rent roadshow versions of Kiss, the Vocalist and Bassist are different. (They're also the coolest looking and named members of the group.

The bassist is Xenon Ishikawa, hides his face under the shaggiest wig ever, and depending on what year you see him perform, sometimes the biggest man in the band. He's also a great bassist.

The vocalist was originally Demon Kogure, but due to legal disputes, changed it to Demon Kakka ("His Excellency Demon") in the 90s. He has a distinctive face paint and has become a fixture of Japanese pop culture. He's an awesome singer, can speak and sing in English, but prefers Japanese. Finally, he made an appearance on Larry King that can be seen on YouTube.

They had an anime based on them, and true to their gimmick, broke up the band at the end of 1999 after a farewell concert, having announced that their work was done. Of course, they've since reunited, and made a bunch of albums and reunion tours. Most of their earlier stuff is hit or miss musically, but the more recent work is solid hard rock (maybe a bit of old school metal).

  9. I fuckin love me some Alestorm but yeah i am a massive dork, there's just something about the big heroic songs like 1741 and Sunset on the Golden Age that gets my blood up but then splice in some goofy shit like Mexico, Drink, Hangover and Fucked with an Anchor and i go from sad sack wall flower to fuckin party monster before you can say YOHO!! Also Diggy Diggy Hole is my jam!

  10. Lmao. Was this video where you mildly critiqued Baby Metal and you got a ton of their fans mad at you? Because I didn’t hear anything negative about them. You were pretty generous lol

  11. I really like ghost when I first started to listen to them I saw a lot of criticism about it not being "real rock" but whatever I think at some point you just stop caring what people think. I work and study all day, at the end of the day I don't have the energy to mind about others opinions I just want to have some fun. And Ghost is a fun band for me. I really don't know much about the others that you mentioned but i'll definitely check them out. Great video!👍

  12. I love BabyMetal and there is another similar band called LadyBaby which is 2 cute Japanese girls and this Australian guy with a beard and dress who growls out vocals over the girls singing. Their first album is actually pretty good.

  13. I guess its entirely a taste thing, but I almost winced at the throw-away conclusion for Tenacious D. Their sound and singing is phenomenal! The goofy lyrics and odd rhythms for them is the only thing that has me think, "not today", but on the flip side it was noted to be a core with the band. Jack said roughly somewhere that he could not commit to a more serious design. Kinda like Steel Panther, they've got some raw power and effort behind them, but… the lyrics make it hard to listen to if you just want the sound and not the distracting humor.

Alestorm and Babymetal side by side is kinda funny, as they are more of the pinnacle idea to me of this gimmick metal thing. They're good for dumb and quick fun, but could I just throw their songs up and jam like most metal music? Not even close. There's something shallow to them. Somewhere between the repetition of the basic song structure, and the long stretched out theme, these bands get very worn and old really fast. Its odd too, because I know a lot of Alestorm fans that take serious joy in the music. Maybe I'm just not "pirate" enough to stick with it, but its strictly a very small and in-the-moment novelty for me to enjoy on occasions. Then there's Okilly Dokilly, which… not even the music is good to me, and the whole joke just feels sour. Like, I get it, Ned Flanders wouldn't be expected to have band sound like that, but…. I can't even hear the lyrics or much of the persona in it, so its not even good at being a gimmick.

… Now Sleep Token is one I never heard of, and I'm curious about that description. Going to have to check that one out.
