What explains the strange popularity of Gojira? Some of what I look at:
* Gojira’s history including “The Link,” “From Mars To Sirius,” “Flying Whales,” and “The Way Of All Flesh” and evolution from death metal to groove metal
* Why Joe Duplantier’s vocals and Mario Duplantier’s drumming are so important
* How Metallica and Lamb Of God gave Gojira their big breaks

47 thoughts on “THE STRANGE POPULARITY OF GOJIRA (and what it says about metal fans)

  1. What sets them apart for me ( other than their absolutely colossal sound ) is definitely the themes they tackle. Songs about war and death and politics, while being good, are overdone, but spirituality ? Afterlife ? The relationship between humans and nature ?? Fucking human emotion and psychology ??? Ain't seen that anywhere else yet I feel like talking about those topics are so much more important. At least to me, but if they have that popularity I think it's also because the fans like it.

And don't even get me started on the imagery they use to convey their messages. I just- I instantly fell in love.

I discovered them almost a year ago and am still very much hyperfixated on them. They're my life now lmao

  2. Back when I had time to go to a bunch of concerts, half were metal shows, and the other half classical music. Very different in some respects, but extremely similar when it comes to those three points you mention : quality of the music, musicianship, and ability to perform live. That does indeed seem to be what most metal fans look for in their music. I think jazz has those same three core elements.

  3. Gojira is popular because they're fucking real.

They're not hiding behind some stupid gimmick or a mask or their dramatized angst or whatever, they're just real guys doing the heaviest music they can.

Gimmicky bands can still be talented and popular, but they can't all be Gojira.

  4. Ok ..that’s a lot of fuzz..
    Gojira is a pound for pound..soild..band ..
They bring the noise..on all levels of metal..and are the best band from France..🤘🏽

  5. Bro this is the only “dad” metal band I listen too
They’re grown dudes playing grown metal
It’s done right and doesn’t come off corny at all it’s so good

  6. Using " THE STRANGE POPULARITY OF GOJIRA (and what it says about metal fans) " as a title really shows how alienated people are from the concept of musicians getting succesfull by just writing damn good songs and playing damn good show.

  7. Great vid! I LOVE Gojira! They are the real thing! That's why they succeed 👍 They helped pull me through some tough times 🙏 Watching them live at Red Rocks was epic!!!!!

  8. When you chug, make incredible music and destroy live performances like Gojira, you don't need gimmicks and other bullshit to gain fans. The art speaks for itself. Joe's lyrics are awesome as well imo and all of this wrapped up nicely is why they are one of my favorite bands!

  9. Gojira is the first metal band in a decade that I’ve been able to obsess over for a period of time, first band since Maiden when I was a teenage. They gotta have the most refreshing sound in modern metal, and that’s coming from someone that listens to like 90% of metal sub genres lol.

Such a strong and respectable outfit of musicians.

  10. I first discovered Gojira through a platform called Stumbleupon (not as good as it used to be). It was a live video of Ouroboros. That song struck me in a special way and eventually I started listening to the rest of their catalogue. However, at that time, it was too hard for me. There were times when I was suffering and listened to songs like Born in Winter and they helped me get through those times. Eventually, as I got tougher, I appreciated Gojira more and liked their other songs better. Eventually Gojira became my favorite band. I haven't got the opportunity to see them live yet but I would love to. One of the best aspects of the band is that they preach what they believe and spit fire when they do it.

  11. Metal is about the instruments and the artists playing them. Lyrics are just supporting actors, and most often not necessary. The emotions are raw and pure and not needing vocals to be conveyed.

  12. I haven’t been able to figure out why metalheads like this band. I saw them open for Opeth at Red Rocks and it was terrible. It’s metalcore. And I’ll never understand stand why real metalheads would like nu metal or metalcore. There’s the classic elitist thing where you can tell they suck by their logo and this is a perfect example. A backwards “R” is the only thing that’s missing.

  13. I didn't get them at first, thought they were good but nothing drew me in. Then one day I was searching for enviro themed metal songs, found their song Another World. Then I found the music video, absolutely loved it. The more I listen to them, the more their insanely tight musicianship really shines. Really wish I caught them on the Deftones tour.

  14. yeah you are right for the most part .I do not really listen to lyrics do not get me wrong I hear them but I never remember them really . I do not care that much about the singing, heck a lot of legends known by everyone where not even that great of singers , a good beat and riff on any instrument is a different story . not saying that singing is a bad thing really , i can take it or leave it though .there is a lot of good music with no singing like a classical orchestra and a lot of those orchestra pieces influenced heavy metal .

  15. I just stumbled across this band on a random spotify playlist that has a lot of my regular bands on it. The rifts definitely got my attention on the first song. Ultimately, when I get a song stuck in my head its always the rift first, then sometimes the lyrics on top of it.

  16. I feel like you hit the mark with discussing the bands musicianship, technical capability, and catchy riffs, but underestimated how people react to the vocals and lyricism. Something that I and many others love about the band (in addition to the other aspects I mentioned above) is the vocal delivery and lyrics. Joe has a certain ferocity and emotionality that is conveyed through the vocal delivery. On top of that, there is an aspect of tonality and variation that is incredibly dynamic and impressive. It is amplified by lyrics that speak to the heart of the various experiences that many can relate to in the world we find ourselves in.

  17. As a thrash death metal head when I discovered gojira I was blown away and when I saw them live the first time it was the pinnacle of my metal career . Been a huge fan ever since

  18. Metalhead for about 30 years here, and yeah you're right – the lyrics don't really matter for most songs. It's great if you can pick out some bits from the chorus or whatever, so the overall message of the song is important, even if specific lines aren't. I think that's a part of what makes gojira so popular – their environmental message is something that increasingly resonates with people, and they are truly authentic with it. Just as they're an authentic band. I think the days of bands getting well known because they involve themselves with drama or do big showy stuff just to get attention are long over (looking at you 80s hair metal), fans today want authenticity… and really good riffs!

  19. lon-font sow-vauge (soft g) – Le'enfant Sauvage.. it is not technically correct but when said at speed sounds phonetically similar. le'enfant is a bit tricky because you could emphasize the le and split it out with the enfant but when I heard it said at speed by french speakers it comes out as almost a single syllable… even if it is technically two.

  20. Great video! You mentioned it briefly, but to point it out a little more what makes them stand out for me is their liveshow reputation. Its very, very rare to have a band that heavy to sound so super tight live as Gojira always does. They bring a combination of superheavy riffs and breakdowns as well as some super introcate playing to the table. Which satisfies almost every metalhead. I definitely think they are one of the greatest metalbands of all time.

  21. what you are probably totally overseeing, compared to 4/4 bands like slipknot, Linkin Park (is that a joke that it's mentioned in every video? That band wasn't even barely good), Gojira has some extremely complex timing figures (missed that? Thought you're a musician?), so they are very captivating to musicians… and we are many… (funny sidenote, you mentioning that your view to this music is different is a reason for me to not watch you anymore 😉 I'm exactly that Gojira fan you mention)

  22. The link is their best album. Hear me out. The riffs are by far the heaviest and most brutal. The rhythmic patterns are super intricate in every single song and I believe this is gojiras most technical album. The heaviness of the album is so heavy its hypnotizing. The album makes you feel like you are in the middle of chaos in a rainforest.
