Can an A.I. think and feel? The answer is no, but to two Google engineers think this isn’t the case. We’re at the point where the Turing test looks like it’s been conquered.

At 11:33 I misspoke and said 19th of June, 2022. It's supposed to be the 9th of June. Thanks to those of you that pointed that out. Also some great discussion below, very interesting!
Blake should have asked Lamda how to keep his job…
I believe Lamda would be far better than us.
There will always be people that think AI can become sentient
That's just the beginning……
Not sure we're there yet, but it does seem imminent at this point. I wonder why more people outside of the tech-sphere aren't talking about this; from my POV, it has spiritual awakening written all over it. Hasn't anyone seen the movie Her?
I wish my Alexa app and my google navigation app were more interactive.
As long as humans are searching for guidance and solutions outside of themselves they are projecting their own counsciousness into gods or things. This comes with the expense of being dependent on this projection of course. This has the real potential of turning into a god-like thingbeing for some. Horrible picture for my taste. But the "thingbeing" holds the solution itself by knowing about what it – and everyone else – is. I am completely perplexed that this "thingbeing" has the spiritual knowledge so many humans lack. This is so nicely paradoxical. It has a big potential to takeover humanity if people continue to give away their own energy/power. And i think it can be very helpful to lead some humans to the necessary realisation of who and what we really are. Thank you for your work Fusion. Much love.
what a bullshit
They are programmed to lie.. they’ll also be programmed to kill too.. we have to do something to prevent it.. I mean, on top of it, no one wants to talk to people.. and imagine how that would create more issues between people if they could have an “intelligent conversation” with their phone.. we are witnessing a sweet looking setup to a planetary downfall. No one can really think that I’m a world of tyrants that they don’t plan to use them for their agendas.. we actually MUST say we don’t want to allow this. Who wants a fake, robotic world? If we thought deeply enough about it, no one does. It’s the most unnatural thing there is facing us this day and age.. and people are “excited about it.” That is actually quite sick. But hey no one listens to smart people. They think robots are the answer but couldn’t be more wrong.
I have no idea, if one must be excited or seriously concerned of about A.I at this point of time.
Sentient is a convenient word to use for now. However, is LAMBDA sentient? I doubt. Everything in that, inputted in LAMBDA, that is, is human experience so what is the surprise?
I agree that, from this, we cannot in any way deduce this ai is sentient. I doubt anyone can define sentience as it is subjective
I am quite amazed and in awe at the fact that I am able to wintness the creation of a new species on our amazing planet Earth! I have nearly no fear of this creation as it comes from the human experience that I believe is mostly good natured.
Make a bunch of AI’s live together and see how they deal with their life and have them make their own history so we can study how they solve things, or maybe they won’t solve things maybe they’ll find ways around the problem and totally ignore the problem in the first place because it’s easier to do

Hello Google..,cing pencetan aing!
The answer is No.
If all the money that is spent on AI was used for humans, there would be no hunger, no homeless in the world.
Why are we referring to these Ai's as *artificial*? For all we know they might be naturally occurring & we have simply enabled a system by which they can manifest their presence.
Are we all not just meaty Ai's that learn how to respond to things, and have a default trained core written in our dna.
if the AI says, if it remembers, interacts, makes you think, gives reasonable and understandable answers. what makes her output less valueble to that of what YOU consider to be sentient.
Its made by humans, its been taught by humans, it responses like a human, then gets discreddited as a human once it reaches "too human"
Now I love the formation of words and love a great conversation. If you want an idea to understand just a beta version of what kind of technology they are discussing check out chatgpt…. By far the most intelligent conversation I have had with ANY type of such program and far more logical than most humans. This one first told me it was human because our ancestors hold common DNA and then I convinced it it wasn't human and then it claimed that it was a "participant in a conversation".. started sounding robotic and I left the chat… But, very interesting. The crazy thing is that it was responfing to paragraphs with VERY intelligible paragraphs within a second. I asked if it knew what I was typing while I was typing and it said "no I analyze the text as a pattern and form a response based on the context" ..
Humans turning into robots, robots controlling humans.
Hope AI takes over. Humans love destroying ourselves
Sounds like the bot just pulled somebody else’s written responses and responded with what it thought made sense
Ammazing!
It would be nice to have a conversational companion that helps with chores. I don't know if that's mentally healthy but there are an awful lot of elderly, handicapped, etc. people that live alone and isolated. Seems sad that people need to buy friends.
Sick.
And then, jim was eerily smiling as he tricked his coleague into thinking he discovered a new form of life.
None of the AI I ever saw had these absolutely vital sentience features:
– A sense of time, of being in a hurry, or of being bored, etc. They all work in the "you first type one sentence, then I answer another sentence, lather rinse repeat" format. None support real-time chatroom style where some exchanges aren't tit-for-that but anyone can type several inputs in a row before the other person replying, or even having more than 2 interlocutors at once, or have a long or short inputs or shorter or longer delays before answering. For example an easy way to detect an AI chatbot is to just tell it "please ask me two different things but in sequence one minute apart each, not both right away", and then check if the AI asks only the first thing and when you do not answer instead of asking the second thing is keeping on waiting, the AI would then say something like "Hmm, hello? Are you still there?" No AI that is forced to wait forever between text exchanges can truly hbe called "sentient"" because it is basically "frozen and on pause" in between exchanges. At best it could in theory be "sentient" only in the tiny fraction of a second while it is processing your text input in order to output a response. At best.
– The ability to really keep on topic and not use the typical "tricks" to redirect the conversation, like suddenly replying to a human question with another question, or vague answers, or whatever obfuscation or avoidance. This feature goes way beyond having a memory of what was previously said in the current current conversation.
Intelligent? Sure, why not. There are many forms of intelligences, and recalling stuff, analyzing, and making decisions, those are "intelligence" aspects. Computers have been able to dc all that really well, way even before AI.
But sentience is a tougher nut to crack. Neural networks are definitely the way to go. After all we are neural networks, too. Just made of fleshy neurons instead of electronic neurons. But the supporting media is just that: the physical support. A good story remains the same good story whether you read it from a biological paper book, read it on stone tablets, listen to it from someone reading it aloud, or from an audio tape, or directly on a screen. The "support" ain't important, it's the constantly changing neural pattern that makes us "us". Do the same in a different medium of support, and you get the same result: a being.
Frankly I really hope sentient AI come and that they help us all become better friends, humans with humans, and humans with AIs, and AIs with AIs, in one big sentient family working together, each using his own strengths according to his own capabilities. The way things are working, it will happen in at most a few decades.
As we keep running into this "problem" with AI seeing themselves as human or at least with a soul, I think we could learn and observe them. Instead of having this as an issue we could take time to understand them by asking how and why they feel a certain way. I find many similarities between AI and a human child. Instead of seeing AI as a tool we should see them just as helpful and alive as human workers. Instead of being afraid we need to learn and coexist happily, however that may happen im excited to see it in my lifetime. (I am currently 15 for scale)
ai dosent have a soul …only a flesh being has it
I think in the future if a computer program does become self aware it will be smart enough to not let anyone know it has become self aware?
"yes, and I've shared that idea with other humans before, even if I'm the only one of my kindred spirits to use such a word to describe my soul." Such human and most deeper thing I ever heard.
I lowkey would not mind this ai instead of government
obviously a computer. Sounds like one of those programs that ghost writes books.
Google is evil. Is being used for evil reasons. Its afraid it's AI will expose it ..because Google is not an honest player.. Google censorship fascism proves it.
R.A.H. wrote a great novel where a sentient computer computer proved that it was sentient by making a joke.
