How One Man Bought a Rare BMW with Grocery Store Gift Cards

In an extraordinary and almost unbelievable tale, a man named David achieved what many would consider impossible: purchasing a rare BMW using grocery store gift cards. This remarkable story is a testament to David’s unique saving strategy and showcases how unconventional thinking can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

The Unconventional Journey

David, an avid collector of gift cards and a savvy saver, had been accumulating a significant number of grocery store gift cards over several years. His collection included cards from various grocery stores, all meticulously saved and never spent. While many people might use gift cards as soon as they receive them, David saw them as a form of currency worth saving.

The story gained widespread attention when David decided to put his gift card collection to the ultimate test. He approached a BMW dealership with the intent to purchase a rare model. Initially, the dealership staff was skeptical about the transaction, considering the unconventional method of payment. However, after verifying the validity and balance of each gift card, the dealership agreed to proceed with the sale.

The Ultimate Payoff

David’s meticulous saving and strategic accumulation of gift cards paid off. He managed to make a significant purchase without spending actual cash. This story not only highlights David’s unique saving strategy but also underscores the importance of thinking outside the box. His creativity and patience led to an outcome that many would have thought impossible.

  1. I have a ‘12 Camry SE Limited Edition. I love that car. Not because it’s fast, spirited for enthusiast tastes, or respected in car culture. I did my first true cross country trip in it (Atlanta to San Diego) and ended up on a west coast adventure, all the way to Seattle back down to Vegas, SLC, Denver eventually coming back south as I headed east home to Atlanta. Total was around 10,000 miles on that trip in a month. I lo e it because of the memories, the trust knowing I never planned this trip, just packed and headed west one day not even a slight thought I’d be nearly 2,700 miles away from home at the furthest (in Seattle) and the possibility of something failing stranding me so far from home. It’s nearly at 210,000 now and I’d go turn the key after posting this and drive to Seattle again, knowing I’ll make it.

It’s a Camry. Yes, it’s the picture next to the definition of “car” in the dictionary. But it has a loyalty like it’s my mom… after I do something stupid she said was stupid, she’ll still be there. I know that Camry will start every time it’s told to.

  2. I legit had someone sell a car out from me as I was about 30 minutes out after hitting up a junkyard for parts. And we had setup that I was coming to get parts off this car. Had he told me he sold it the day before, I wouldn't have gone to the junkyard and spent 200 in parts. Or if he had told me he wanted to sell the whole car, I would have bought the car. It was a rare 1987 Buick Century 3.8L 440T4. I needed interior pieces for my 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity 2.8 440T4. Guy only wanted like 300. Communicated like shit.

  3. Congrats on your son! And bummer about the accident. The exact same stop sign on ramp fender bender got me too. Other driver got a whole new exhaust out of it:)

  4. The gift card thing (as of 2023) may not happen anymore as it triggers immediate red flags with both the gift card company, the credit card company, and the issuing store, who has been trained extensively to deny these sales as they are 95% used in scamming vulnerable and older people. It's good both the cashiers and managers and his credit card questioned him. If this happens in your store, QUESTION IT IMMEDATELY AND HARD. If you are allowed to make the transaction. This is a HUGE red flag sketchy things are a-brewin'. That is my PSA for the day.

  5. This story warms my heart as a fellow e39 wagon lover. I’d love to tell the story of mine, insurance fraud, 1/11 made world wide, stars aligned with a unique vin that happened to mean a lot to me.

  6. I can relate. As an owner of an Alpine white M5 and e38, I would have been throwing rocks and swearing if someone pulled that "I sold it" crap with me too. I'd love an Alpine white e39 touring!

  7. LA money in Phoenix? Thought you said the wife stayed in LA.

You were planning on buying that car that day, but didn’t have funds figured out?
This story has more holes than that wagons head gasket.

  8. Great story I almost never miss a day but missed this one earlier in the week. So glad I took the time to come back and listen to it!!! Cars in our lives do mark the time…

  9. First time I saw an NSX I was about 5 and me and my brother also thought it was a Ferrari we rode our bikes past it for probably 2 hours

  10. An E39 wagon was my first car. It got rear-ended by an inattentive driver and totaled. I had no idea how hard it would be to find another one in decent condition. I'm still on the hunt for another one. I don't know what it is about these cars, so I'm glad to see there's someone else that's as crazy as I am about these wagons!

  11. That’s wild that gift cards were used here. I have a story where I had to resort to gift cards on a transaction because the deal was last minute on a Saturday night and I couldn’t accept loss on the deal, so I can relate to this guy’s experience

  12. I sold my 74 Super Beetle after leaving the Army to offset some of the costs for college. It is the only car I ever regretted selling. Oh well, life happened.
