With the release of the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18, people forget that one of the core elements of the software came in the form of a little phone called the Palm Pre in 2009. The story of the device is a wild ride and it’s impact is still with us today. In this episode we explore.

  1. Don't anyone remember anything before 2007?
Web OS wqs already ahead of the iPhone and also had multitouch BEFORE the iPhone.
The iPhone was really behind competitors in so many ways but after the iPhone it's like everyone forgot we had smartphones with mostly screen and no physical keyboard for many years.

The iPhone litteraly had only ONE thing before others..
And that was to combine both glass and multitouch on a device.
Nut we already had gotten multitouch earlier.
And the main way to share pictures in those days was MMS.. iPhone did not 3vek support that before the iPhone 4 (or maybe the 3GS gotit withan update?)
They litteraly skipped important features everyone else had😂 Dumb phones had MMS but not iPhone. Insane.
Remember they even locked down bluetooth etc and even file sharing..
All other phones supported various files and most even had mp3 ringtone from any mp3 file.
iPhone did not even allow custom ringtones like even dumb phones had.
Avtually, even dumb phones had basicly everything the iPhone offered.. I remember how hard we laughed at the 3 or 4 first generations because it lacked basic features that was standard on almost anything else on tue market😅
And people belive iPhone changed the smartphone markwt wh3n ot litteraly just made a bad copy of what we already had.

Still remember how Insane much better camera, storage (also had SD card), better battery and MANY more features on a older smartphone when the iPhone arrived.

Only people actually excited for the forst several generations iPhone was Americans because the US market was years behind in the phone market😂

Still remember it like it was last week how we moked the release and wondered why on earth it was lacking so many basic features in 2007😂

  2. Yeah, I had one of those palm phones. Was a cool device. HTC had some cool phones with haptics that seemed like Samsung copied. I had this HATC phone that vibrated while playing pinball and it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Now Samsung vibrate when you touch them lol.

  3. Palm pre and hp supported palm with web os was good too. The tablet was also good too. Worked for best buy back in the day as a teen in tablet and computer sales and Boy what a time

  4. Palm history is very interesting, they invented the modern smartphone era and the company sunk because of Apple.

And then Apple also bought them and used many of their exclusive patents, that’s why you didn’t see a mute switch in other smartphones but you can have one on your iPhone or iPad.

Much time before iOS or Android I remember being on middle and high school and having the luck of owning a Palm Treo, (from the 600 series to the 700 series powered by windows) I love it so much and it was capable of many things that modern phones could also make (and many be much better) but in a time were my class mates were sending ringtones via infrared, and some other phones like the Walkman line of Sony can barely play music.

Despite Palm doesn’t exist anymore we can find some of those patents present on the newest iPhone like the mute switch and most recently the “programable button” included on the 17 pro max version.

  5. Hi this is gracious from kampala Uganda Africa

Just had a suggestion for content you could create I have been watching your content and I like the precision and research you put into it, so I have been a Uber driver in uganda and ever since its closure in a couple of Africa countries without an proper justification apart from a few messages! Of restructuring I thought you could throw in some more light on it thanks, I hope this reaches you

  6. Hearing that Palm failed because their software was ahead of their hardware, then going back to Apple execs' quotes on why they deliberately limited the original iPhone to only run one app at a time shows exactly why Apple succeeds. They have the right vision, not just for great ideas but for how their consumers will react to their products and what will actually make them satisfied. Do less but do it right.

  7. This story is similar to that of the Sega Dreamcast. This gaming console from 1998 was ahead of its time, sporting features that were unheard of from consoles back then — internet connectivity, DLCs, cross-platform play, stick drift-proof (Hall effect) joystick, analog triggers, etc. In spite of these innovations, the Dreamcast ended up becoming Sega's last console.

  8. I had a prē and a pixi on Sprint network and the data service in medium size city was basically unusable. The quality of the devices wasn’t good enough for everyday use and the plasticy screen was a scratch magnet. Kind of the La Croix of even the iPhones of the time 😅
