Smartphones are so ubiquitous that they almost fade into the background. Everyone has one and nobody thinks twice about them. But what if they were affecting the way our brains function in a very tangible way? That would mean society has been collectively altered and we don’t even know it. In this episode we take a look at the research of the tenuous relationship between smartphones and our brains.

48 thoughts on “How Smartphones Shrink Our Brains

  1. I used to have more than 5 hours of daily screen time on my phone before I realized how much time I wasted on contents from which I learn nothing. I then decided to halve the screen time to 2 and a half hours. The biggest takeaway I get from doing it is that I am able to do way more things in a day. I think it is as rewarding as getting up everyday an hour earlier than before, something I shall do in the long run. 🙂

  2. multi task on the job. Corporation : Lets blame smart phone for low productivity.
CO2 emission. Corporation : Lets blame car owners. insert Taylor swift.
Obesity. Corporation : Lets blame fatty food instead of sugar.
Low wages. Corporate again : lets create contractuals project base and dont pay their benefits.

    Classic Corporation scheme goes on.

  3. Thank you for this informative video. I stopped or limited Facebook use and I noticed I felt happier. It's true that social media is like hypnotizing and controlling us as well as multitasking

  4. Im addicted to watching documentaries 😂 i think i actually gain knowledge because of the fast network of information at my fingertip. If only i can remember them all..

  5. 29 mins of listening to pure garbage. here let me shorten this video with my take.

brain works when you watch videos. the light is work, the processing of that light is work, the sound from that video is work, the processing of that sound is work, the information is work, the processing of that information is work, and lastly, the decision between breathing and focusing is work. do you breath in and out from your nose regardless of what is in front of you>? if not then you are shrinking your brain. if you go to the gym and you are exhausted then you will eventually destroy your body and never recover nor will you get any gains.

  6. I have known all this and been been saying it — every major point mentioned in this video, including the physical effects — for 13 years, so none of this is really new. (I'm a physicist, engineer and historian.) It's made me rather unpopular. A few years ago, I started to noticed that the devastating effects of social media combined with smartphones were being taken more seriously. As these problems have been taken more seriously, more data have been accumulated and it's gotten much harder to say "yeah, well, you can't prove that." Now we know and the message is seeping out, but the question is: can our societies change course before it's too late? I hope so, but I still have my doubts.

    Thank you for this video.

  7. I saw one statistics saying that smartphone usage population had gone up to about 90% throughout almost every age groups. Surprisingly our family is addicted too haha

  8. So true. Try teaching this generation of teens anything in a classroom or outdoors, anywhere really, you'll struggle. They struggle to concentrate, to commit things into memory, and how to read fluently. I teach English to home speakers, and Computer Applications and Technology (CAT) to Teens around 15-18 years of age. Cellphones and social media is killing them, they never want to sit and be bored. Their essays are so bad, no imagination, awful grammar, and most of them are just apathetic towards their studies.

I monitor my own smartphone usage, being careful not to stay on social media apps. I have deleted Facebook (2014 have not gone back) and now recently Twitter, simply because I just could not handle the amount of vitriol on the sight, seems to have gotten worse under Elon.

The multitasking thing is quite true. I have done experiments with my kids where they were allowed to be on their phones as I read to them children's short story. Afterwards I gave them comprehension questions on the story. None of them passed, even the ones who always say, "Sir I concentrate better while I'm on my phone".

  9. Increased anxioussness for sure due to the phone. Should be researched more for the global population, and for myself, quitting as much as possible with social media (which includes whatsapp)

  10. I don't carry one. Brain intact.
It's lonely until enough will catch on – hope they will have enough brain power left to converse by then.
    The Borg are not interesting.

  11. This is such a bias story. A smartphone is a tool, how you decide to use it is your choice. It can be used for educational purposes that will actually grow your neural network, Also, you can't physically shirk a brain.

  12. I have turned off notifications for social media apps. Since then I've substantially decreased the use of them. However since then those apps were pushing other kind of notifications so I can get back in it.. crazy how they really want us to use them.

  13. And yet here it is on YouTube; stinks like double standards as per usual and these people who conduct this "research" would be out of work.
