Experience the days, minutes, and seconds leading up to the 2019 White Island Eruption that killed 22 people through the eyes of survivors, rescue workers and the scientists who have been studying the volcano for years.
Countdown to Disaster: The Eruption of White Island examines the days, minutes, and seconds leading up to the 2019 explosion that killed 22 people.
As witnessed through the eyes of the people who were there, many of whom are only now coming out of hospital, and through the rescue workers who risked their own lives, plus the scientists who have been studying the volcano for years and know it intimately, Countdown to Disaster tells of a natural disaster no-one saw coming, yet was completely avoidable.
At 2:11pm on December 9, 2019, day trippers to a Volcanic Isle in the middle of the Bay of Plenty learnt the hard way that nature can be unpredictable and dangerous.
The deadly White Island eruption killed 22 people and left 26 more with life changing injuries – some victims still in intensive care months after the tragedy.
Countdown to Disaster is the first full-length documentary to recount the tragic volcanic eruption and interrogate whether this disaster was avoidable.

What kind of training did the 'professionals' have that they wouldn't have brought gas masks to a VOLCANIC ERUPTION? I hate the self-aggrandizing way that some of them are speaking, as if they did anything except come in after the fact. And they talk about how the environment would affect THEM, how hard it was for THEM, what a long day it would be for THEM. Notice that the civilian pilots are speaking about the VICTIMS, not themselves. The first tour group, the civilian pilots, and the medical personnel on shore are heroes.
I hate that they call this location an island. It’s a freaking volcano! It just happens to sit in the water. They need to call it a volcano( it’s active) and maybe people would take it more seriously.
That dude. Is a legend. F***ing makes me tear up, thinking he sat with them in your final moments. To be there, to make them comfortable as much as he could. The day they left this planet. They werent alone. He had a brief moment to do these things, he took that moment God gave him and did what he was asked. Risking his life and saved a lot of people.
Jason and Tom are HERO’S
They should build some kind of SAFE AREA in case of another eruption while people are on the Beautiful island.
It’s tragic what happened, who wouldn’t want to go see this majestic , Iconic Beautiful Island? Hopefully all companies learned from this day in 2019 as the survivors heal their losses and wounds and continue to live. There is RISK in everything we do each day in our life. We never forget , but we heal and move past this.
Having suffered 3rd degree burns on my first birthday, I don't remember it thank God, but I live with the scars. I have said this so many times that there are places that are not for tourists. A volcano is one of then. No one should have been there, nor allowed. My heart breaks for the families. More for the children that died there. It's a tragedy that shouldn't have happened and everyone that lost their lives will have died teaching us nothing if they allow this to Happen again. I don't think any one should get to sue any one. There are no guarantees when you play with fire. These people chose to do this. You can't tell me they had no idea. This is your life. You are not going to win. It's a volcano. It's going to erupt. I would never put myself out my family in this kind of danger.
I won't visit one. I won't go in hot springs no matter where they are. Yellowstone is not a vacation spot. Old faithful is going to not be faithful one day., simply because mother nature is not predictable as we like to believe we can predict. Animals have better instincts than we do. When she acts out the animals react. It's her world, we need to respect that and lose the attitudes of entitlement. We also need to be accountable for our own actions.
Wow. The civilians pilots are heroes. Figures they saved people and the actual government run emergency personnel failed miserably and let people di3 and let the deceased go missing. What a shame.
Bless the men who went in first, I hope they received therapy after. They're absolutely heroes.
So tragic! So many people trying to help each other as best they could. May all those souls rest in peace.
Just like Mt. St. Helens. People were flocking to go look and some of the people that lived there didn’t want to leave!
Very well done. Thanks for the great upload.
