There’s just too much child labor in the U.S. for Hyundai. The Korean automaker is severing ties with its American subsidiaries. Because children as young as 12 were found working at two Alabama plants. Now it’s investigating dozens of other locations in its U.S. supply chain for similar practices

  1. …but like I used to deliver papers… did it pay better than that. Made like .5 dollars an hour. And this was like 20 years ago. So. How much was the kid making. And how dangerous was it?

  2. bro i would have loved to work for free in a plant as a kid to learn a trade early on this is kinda stupid and we need mire context

  3. It was probably the owners kids or some shit you know how many local mom and pop shops have their underage kids helping out? Probably the only time they get to spend with their kids…yea chew on that

  4. This never made mainstream news. It's the first time I've heard about this. Go figure that this would happen in a red state where they care so much about life, and protecting kids.

  5. Depending on the situation and what the job was most States have a law around the age of 14 being young enough to start work. I personally think that a teenager either having a job or an extracurricular is a needed element. Though 12 In a car factory does seem very concerning

  6. Bruh I bet someone just said ya your kid can work here,I highly doubt they were employed by the company and I bet money they were just paid under the table because they really wanted to work there and someone in upper management was like ok and being exposed probably lost them their job and cost that location a lot of money just because "a" singular kid wanted to start working early.

  7. I think the consent issue is the biggest problem here. Kids that age will do anything to fit in, so it's hard to judge if anything they do is really of their own will and not because they're trying to meet a real or imagined expectation. If there was a rigorous way to ensure they were there of their own will, I don't see the problem with kids working. But since that's so hard to determine from the outside, I say it's better to assume there are unacknowledged external pressures and discourage working so young.

I don't feel like many 20 or even 30 somethings have done enough reflection to really be making their own decisions and not following whatever were the expectations foisted on them by their upbringing, so I don't think age is a good metric for judging consent in general. If they're sound minded, put the 5 year olds to work, I just think it's unlikely any 5 year old is, and it's the responsibility of the ostensibly sound minded to protect those who are not from abuse.
